This is the go-to guide for inositol\u2019s various health benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8-potential-inositol-health-benefits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 potential inositol health benefits\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citrus, beans, and whole grains are part of a healthy diet, but here are several reasons someone might consider increasing their intake\u2014or taking an inositol supplement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-it-may-help-control-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Women undergoing IVF therapy have more successful outcomes with inositol supplementation,\u201d Marinaccio says. \u201cBesides supporting healthier egg development, inositol improves insulin sensitivity and how the ovaries respond to pituitary hormone gonadotropin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Marinaccio notes that inositol supplementation research has typically focused on women with PCOS or who are undergoing IVF, so it\u2019s unclear whether it can provide fertility benefits to the general public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-it-may-improve-metabolic-syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. It may improve metabolic syndrome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic syndrome isn\u2019t a single condition. It means having at least three risk factors that can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/metabolic-syndrome\/about-metabolic-syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factors include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> high triglyceride levels, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and a large waist circumference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of inositol can\u2019t correct all these issues, but according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tristabestldn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trista Best<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/balanceone.com\/pages\/trista-best\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balance One Supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cit has been associated with improvements in lipid profiles, including reductions in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.\u201d Additionally, she says, \u201cInositol may play a role in modulating fat storage and metabolism. Research indicates that it could impact enzymes involved in lipid synthesis, potentially affecting how the body stores and utilizes fats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, inositol alone can\u2019t solve metabolic disorders. It\u2019s best as part of a comprehensive approach that includes a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and lifestyle changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-it-may-regulate-cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. It may regulate cholesterol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 2 out of every 5 Americans have high cholesterol, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cholesterol\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and every year it causes 2.6 million deaths worldwide, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/data\/gho\/indicator-metadata-registry\/imr-details\/3236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s why \u201clower your cholesterol\u201d is a refrain echoed in doctor\u2019s offices across the country. While specialized medications and lifestyle changes can help, so can inositol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5968598\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systematic review of randomized control trials from 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that inositol may lower not just triglycerides, but LDL (aka \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol). It didn\u2019t, however, appear to have any effect on HDL cholesterol (aka \u201cgood\u201d cholesterol). However, additional research might be necessary to support this conclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-it-might-improve-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. It might improve mental health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brain\u2019s superhighways of neurotransmitters affect many of our emotions\u2014and there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9169302\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some scientific evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that inositol can influence them. \u201cInositol is involved in the phosphatidylinositol (PI) second messenger system, which plays a crucial role in neurotransmission,\u201d says Best. \u201cThis system is linked to the regulation of various neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are implicated in mood and anxiety disorders.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even so, Best says inositol isn\u2019t a substitute for comprehensive mental health treatment and that a balanced diet, regular exercise, and mental health support play important roles. Plus, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9955821\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers have mixed opinions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on whether inositol is truly an effective treatment for mental health conditions, so more data is probably necessary. Still, there\u2019s some evidence it might influence certain disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"panic-disorders\">Panic disorders<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic attacks are sudden bursts of intense fear or anxiety that can be so crippling that some people mistake them for heart attacks. Likewise, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7793450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an earlier small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrated that patients\u2019 panic attacks decreased in frequency and severity after taking inositol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"mood-disorders\"><b>Mood disorders<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has moods, but when they hit peaks or valleys and simply don\u2019t return to normal, it could be a mood disorder. The two most prevalent and well-known are depression and bipolar disorder\u2014both of which may respond to inositol. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24424706\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested inositol could potentially combat depression, particularly in patients with premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Drugs for bipolar disorder often deplete inositols, so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanreview.org\/article\/26657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that taking an inositol supplement alongside lithium and valproic acid could reduce side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"obsessive-compulsive-disorder\"><b>Obsessive-compulsive disorder<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) manifests as repeated, unwanted thoughts that compel someone to take certain actions\u2014often in ways that interfere with daily activities. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8780431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study published in 1996<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patients with OCD taking 18g of Myo-inositol per day had significantly lower scores on the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale than when taking a placebo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-it-may-accelerate-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. It may accelerate weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to weight loss, there\u2019s no get-thin-quick scheme. However, when combined with a healthy diet and exercise, inositol has shown some promise. In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30915778\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study of 43 overweight PCOS patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, those who dieted and took Myo-inositol achieved greater weight loss than those who dieted without taking Myo-inositol. Still, everyone\u2019s body is different, so efficacy may vary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost research on inositol and weight loss centers around people with PCOS,\u201d Marinaccio says. \u201cBut inositol supplementation can be used as an adjunct treatment to lifestyle change for weight loss for healthy individuals, and people with diabetes and prediabetes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best agrees that inositol works as a supplemental treatment. \u201cWhile there is some promising research suggesting that inositol, particularly Myo-inositol, may contribute to improved insulin sensitivity, appetite regulation, and lipid metabolism, it is not a standalone solution for weight management,\u201d says Best. \u201cA comprehensive approach to weight management, encompassing a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and lifestyle modifications remains crucial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is that the research around inositol as a weight loss treatment is ongoing, and anyone who thinks it might help should consult a healthcare professional first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-it-might-improve-sleep-quality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. It might improve sleep quality<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts have spilled a lot of ink over the years on the importance of sleep. It\u2019s crucial for physical and mental wellness, but many people still struggle to get a solid night of shut-eye. Inositol might help, although the evidence for its efficacy as a sleep age is largely anecdotal right now. Still, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28793304\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study from 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linked low concentrations of frontal cortex Myo-inositol to poor sleep (and depression) in adolescents, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32933356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another study from 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> connected it to better sleep quality in pregnant women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-inositol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take inositol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people consume inositol almost every day without even thinking about it. That\u2019s because it\u2019s in some very common foods, including whole grains, beans, brown rice, nuts, citrus, cantaloupe, and other fresh fruits. Simply eating more of these food sources will increase inositol intake, but it might be hard to eat enough of them to hit the levels required for treating certain medical conditions. That\u2019s why people with PCOS, diabetes, mood disorders, or metabolic disorders might want a more concentrated dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inositol tablets and capsules are available over the counter, but it\u2019s often best to consult a doctor before taking them for two main reasons. The first is that inositol may interact with certain medications, particularly diabetes medicines, since both can decrease blood sugar levels. The second is that there are multiple forms of inositol\u2014each with its own properties\u2014and no official standards for dosing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different conditions may require different doses of inositol. For example, someone with PCOS might need Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol at a 40:1 ratio, while someone with gestational diabetes might need 4 g of only Myo-inositol. Plus, it\u2019s often coupled with folic acid, although not always. A healthcare provider can provide professional medical advice on the best type of inositol and dosage for each condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-eating-inositol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of eating inositol\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized inositol as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfcfr\/CFRSearch.cfm?fr=184.1370\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GRAS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which means \u201cgenerally regarded as safe.\u201d Taken in small doses, inositol rarely causes adverse effects, but they\u2019re still possible. These mild side effects didn\u2019t increase in severity, though, even at 30 g per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s very little data on the effects of inositol on nursing mothers, although natural breast milk is rich in Myo-inositol, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37433002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be healthy for the developing brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although inositol has an array of research-backed benefits, a lack of major side effects, and over-the-counter availability, inositol isn\u2019t a super drug\u2014but this nutritional supplement can help certain people with healthcare provider approval. Showing positive effects for people with PCOS, metabolic syndrome, and high blood sugar, and promise in fertility and depression, it\u2019s an attractive option.
