Warm baths<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking warm baths is soothing for a variety of reasons, but adding the right ingredients to your bathwater may yield a concoction that soothes psoriasis. Dr. Klein recommends warm baths once or twice a week but with some stipulations. \u201cUse lukewarm water and limit your soak to 15 minutes,\u201d Dr. Klein says. \u201cAdd <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/epsom-salt\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epsom salts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can help to soften scales and soothe inflammation.\u201d Avoid hot baths as this can cause worsening of dry skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another ingredient to add to warm baths is one you likely already have in your house: baking soda. To counteract this, Dr. Klein recommends using a humidifier in any room you spend a lot of time in, such as your bedroom or office. \u201cAdding moisture to the air prevents water loss and can help to prevent dry skin,\u201d Dr. Klein says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-dandruff-shampoo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Dandruff shampoo<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dandruff shampoos are an unexpected treatment option for psoriasis, but some keratolytic ingredients commonly found in them may provide relief. Look for formulas that contain salicylic acid, notes Dr. Jeffy. Salicylic acid is a common active ingredient found in cosmetics, and whether your flakes are caused by dandruff or scalp psoriasis, dandruff shampoo treated with salicylic acid may help you get some relief from itching and scaly skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSalicylic acid helps to exfoliate and remove some of the excessive cells that pile up, leading to psoriatic plaques,\u201d Dr. Jeffy explains. \u201cIt also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with associated redness and itch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-fish-oil-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Fish oil supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain nutrients found in food and supplements may be beneficial for people with psoriasis due to their anti-inflammatory properties. The omega-3 fatty acids found in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fish-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fish oil supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, may help reduce inflammation, Dr. Klein says. Some researchers have found that fish oil yields positive effects on psoriasis, while others came to a different conclusion. It soothes discomfort, says Dr. Klein, who recommends infusing bathwater with oats. To double up on its benefits, you can also apply topical creams, ointments, and lotions containing colloidal oatmeal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-aloe-vera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Aloe vera\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commonly touted as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sunburn-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remedy for sunburns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, aloe vera may be a promising option to soothe the irritation associated with psoriasis. Turmeric<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric isn\u2019t just a spice reserved for Indian-style cooking\u2014it contains a compound called curcumin, which has been used for its medicinal properties for centuries. Stress reduction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress is one of the most common causes of psoriasis flare-ups, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5829341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fortunately, stress reduction through various methods has been shown to improve it, Dr. Jeffy says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress management and caring for your mental health can therefore be part of an overarching psoriasis treatment plan. Stress relief can look different for everyone, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9515248\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditation and practicing mindfulness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be beneficial for preventing stress-related psoriasis flare-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"14-weight-management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14. Weight management<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The link between psoriasis and obesity is strong. Obesity can increase your risk of developing psoriasis, and in those with existing psoriasis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9321445\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity can amplify it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/psoriasis\/insider\/diet\/psoriasis-what-should-eat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Dermatology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also recommends weight management for people with psoriasis, noting that even a small amount of weight loss can lead to fewer psoriasis plaques on the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"15-oregon-grape\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15. Instead, she recommends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/psoriasis\/treatment\/medications\/phototherapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phototherapy treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which expose skin to UVB rays in a controlled environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-tanning-beds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Tanning beds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanning beds are a potent source of UVB rays, which are known for providing some psoriasis relief. However, the benefits are outweighed by the risk of skin cancer, says Dr. Klein. She strongly recommends against using tanning beds as a remedy for psoriasis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a dangerous means of psoriasis treatment,\u201d adds Dr. Palm. \u201cThe wide variety of new topical treatments, biologic therapies, and other treatment modalities including lifestyle modification are much safer and effective means of controlling psoriasis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-applying-undiluted-essential-oils-to-the-skin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.
