Prescription ibuprofen is 400 mg to 800 mg every four to six hours as needed, with a maximum daily dosage of 3,200 mg. In addition, you may want to consider alternatives if you do experience GI side effects from NSAIDs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you require long-term pain management, your healthcare provider may recommend alternative medications or therapies to minimize the potential risks associated with daily ibuprofen use,\u201d says Dr. Green. This may include treating your GI issues directly before continuing with frequent ibuprofen use or taking prescribed painkillers if your pain is a chronic issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-reduce-the-risk-of-gi-side-effects-with-nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to reduce the risk of GI side effects with NSAIDs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few ways you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17144779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk of GI side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with NSAIDs. Different techniques will work depending on your needs, but experts recommend the following strategies to help prevent adverse effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take the lowest effective dose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to relieve your pain symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid combining ibuprofen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as aspirin or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/celebrex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (celecoxib), which can increase the risk of stomach irritation or bleeding, according to Dr. Green.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Choose short-acting forms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by opting for NSAIDs with shorter half-lives, like ibuprofen 200 mg every four to six hours. There are certain natural remedies, like arnica and bromelain, that some people use in place of NSAIDs.
