These inhaled medications, known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/short-acting-beta-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short-acting beta-agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, open up the lungs and provide quick relief. There are also other medications that can be used for long-term control of asthma symptoms, including cough. All drugs mentioned below are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition to medication, you can also talk with your healthcare provider about avoiding triggers that cause you to experience asthma symptoms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inhaled medications may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/inhalers-and-nebulizers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">administered via<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Metered-dose inhalers (MDI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The most common type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-use-inhaler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhaler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pushes puffs of medicine into the lungs. Some people use a spacer (valved holding chamber) with an MDI. A spacer helps deliver the medicine to the airways and makes the MDI easier to use.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dry-powder inhalers (DPIs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Breath-activated devices that allow the patient to breathe in medicine in the form of a dry powder. Some DPIs contain lactose, so people with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-0383\/11\/24\/7346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">milk protein allergy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should consult their healthcare provider before using DPIs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nebulized solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-a-nebulizer-machine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nebulizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> machine is used to turn liquid medicine into a fine mist that is inhaled over a period of time (usually 10 or 15 minutes) with a mouthpiece or mask. Often referred to as rescue inhalers or quick-relief inhalers, SABAs are commonly used during asthma attacks or exacerbations to provide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000008.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quick relief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. Ipratropium helps open up the airways, making it easier to breathe, and also stops the production of excess mucus in the lungs. It is available as both an inhaler and a nebulized solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atrovent-hfa\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrovent HFA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an asthma inhaler that contains ipratropium and is used for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but is also used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for a non-FDA-approved use) for quick relief of asthma attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/combivent-respimat\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combivent respimat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an inhaler that contains ipratropium and albuterol and is used for COPD but is also used off-label for quick relief of asthma attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ipratropium-albuterol\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ipratropium-albuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also available as a solution for the nebulizer used for COPD and also used off-label for quick relief of asthma attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids, or steroids, work by decreasing inflammation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/inhaled-corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are inhaled by mouth, delivering the medication directly to the lungs. This causes fewer side effects than taking steroids by mouth in pill form. Using ICSs helps decrease inflammation in the airways and helps control asthma symptoms&mdash;but ICSs are not rescue inhalers and do not help if you are having an asthma attack. After using an ICS, you should rinse your mouth with water and then spit. This helps avoid getting an oral yeast infection (yeast infection of the mouth) called thrush. ICSs are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/asthma\/treatment\/medication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considered safe, effective, and well-tolerated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In some cases, oral steroids may need to be continued for a period of time if nothing else is controlling symptoms. If taken for a long time, steroids can cause serious side effects, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/osteoporosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">osteoporosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bone loss), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cataracts, and other problems. They do not treat an acute attack. LABAs work for about 12 hours, so they are usually prescribed to take twice per day. A LABA can never be prescribed alone. This is because a LABA alone (without an ICS) can increase the risk of death. Therefore, a LABA will always be prescribed along with an ICS, either as a combination inhaler (see below), or as two separate products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of LABAs include heart palpitations, nervousness, shaking, dry mouth, and throat irritation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/serevent-diskus\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serevent Diskus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (salmeterol) is an example of a LABA used for&nbsp; maintenance treatment of asthma.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"combination-inhaled-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination inhaled medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/what-is-asthma\/how-is-asthma-treated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain two or three types of medications in one inhaler, such as an ICS plus a LABA. They are used to prevent and control asthma symptoms. Side effects vary based on the individual ingredients. People with asthma can use a SMART inhaler to both control and prevent symptoms as well as for quick relief of asthma symptoms. Currently, Symbicort or Dulera can be used for SMART therapy under the supervision of your doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=e60aa9f9-5139-44df-b886-ebddc3c7eb13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airsupra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contains a SABA (albuterol) and an ICS (budesonide). It is expected to be available sometime in 2024. It can be used in adults as needed to prevent or treat bronchoconstriction (tightening of the airways) and to prevent asthma symptoms.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"long-acting-muscarinic-agonists-lamas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-acting muscarinic agonists (LAMAs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LAMAs such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/spiriva-respimat-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spiriva Respimat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tiotropium) and umeclidinium (an ingredient in Trelegy Ellipta) are used to control asthma symptoms and are usually used in combination with an ICS.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mast-cell-stabilizers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mast cell stabilizers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cromolyn is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/mast-cell-stabilizers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mast cell stabilizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can be inhaled via a nebulizer. It works by preventing mast cells from releasing chemicals that cause inflammation. This makes the airways less likely to narrow.
