Lysine also interacts with aminoglycosides, which are a group of antibiotics. Taking lysine supplements while on these antibiotics can lead to kidney issues,\u201d says Wheeler. While the average person needs about 1 gram of lysine a day for optimal body function, \u201cthe maximum amount that has been studied for benefit is 4 grams per day,\u201d Wheeler says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since higher doses are associated with a higher likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects, do not increase your dose without medical advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"considerations-when-taking-lysine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considerations when taking lysine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, \u201cCaution should be taken with supplements for those with a history of gallstones, kidney disease, and liver disease.
