Some people produce more than others. It may feel sticky or stretchy, appear thin or thick, or vary in color. When it is clear, a typical cause is the vagina cleaning itself or preparing for menstruation. Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/4719-vaginal-discharge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clear vaginal discharge is typically normal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it could signal an infection that requires treatment if other symptoms accompany it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-clear-discharge\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes clear discharge?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The causes of typical vaginal discharge are pretty simple. Clear discharge can happen as a result of the body cleaning itself or preparing for the menstrual cycle, but it can also be a sign of infection, which requires treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-the-vagina-cleaning-itself-or-preparing-for-the-menstrual-period\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. The vagina cleaning itself or preparing for the menstrual period<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal secretions are a part of the vagina&rsquo;s job. Discharge is basically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/symptoms\/vaginal-discharge\/basics\/definition\/sym-20050825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sign of the vagina&rsquo;s self-cleaning system at work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure it stays healthy, clean, and protected from irritation and infection.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Vaginal discharge is a combination of vaginal and cervical fluids and vaginal cells, which helps to keep the vagina healthy,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drladydoctor.com\/about-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelly Culwell, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB-GYN in San Diego, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Normal discharge may be white or clear, thick or thin,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kara-mcelligott-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kara McElligott Park, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB-GYN, NAMS-certified menopause practitioner in Durham, North Carolina, and medical advisor at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miracare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mira<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Clear, stretchy discharge <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sutterhealth.org\/health\/teens\/female\/vaginal-discharge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">typically means<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ovulation is happening, while clear, watery discharge can happen at various times during the menstrual cycle&mdash;especially after exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;At different times of the menstrual cycle, depending on the level of estrogen in the body, the texture and color of vaginal discharge will change,&rdquo; Dr. McElligott continues. &ldquo;The most significant change seen is usually around ovulation, when discharge becomes thick, stretchy, and clear, like an egg white.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as the timing, &ldquo;most people will find more discharge earlier in the cycles and less discharge in the late part of the cycle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/discharge-before-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just before the period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; Dr. Culwell adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, treatment isn&rsquo;t necessary here, and there are no risks to simply leaving the vagina alone (in fact, that may be best, given some vaginal health products, like vitamins and odor treatments, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcpress.mayoclinic.org\/women-health\/vaginal-health-and-hygiene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can cause harm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the color and odor of discharge may change and be considered normal, be on the lookout for other symptoms. Both Dr. McElligott and Dr. Culwell agree that pain, itching, burning, and irritation are not associated with normal discharge, and they may be signs of infection (more on that below).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-a-vaginal-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. A vaginal infection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are also common causes of discharge, according to Dr. Culwell. But while normal clear discharge doesn&rsquo;t have any other symptoms, abnormal discharge from a vaginal infection will be accompanied by symptoms like vaginal itching, foul odor, or pelvic pain. When those symptoms are present, Dr. McElligott urges patients to make an appointment with their primary healthcare provider for proper treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific signs of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-a-yeast-infection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yeast infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thick, white discharge that has the consistency of cottage cheese<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching and irritation in the vagina or vulva (the outer part of the female genitalia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness and swelling of the vulva<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No strong odor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain or burning during sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain or burning when urinating<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bacterial-vaginosis-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of bacterial vaginosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BV) include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thin and white, yellow, or gray discharge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discharge that has a fishy, strong smell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discharge increases after sexual intercourse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning during urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal pain during sexual activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching in and around the vagina<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment depends on the infection. If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/yeast-infection-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&rsquo;s a yeast infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Culwell says healthcare providers will give vaginal or oral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antifungals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antifungal medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bacterial-vaginosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&rsquo;s bacterial vaginosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, expect oral or vaginal antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More specifically, a couple of examples of antifungals include oral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluconazole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and vaginal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/terconazole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while an example of an antibiotic for BV is clindamycin vaginal cream.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to see a healthcare provider for prompt treatment of a vaginal infection, as complications can be serious. &ldquo;If left untreated, the symptoms could worsen and lead to significant irritation of the vagina and external vulvar area,&rdquo; Dr. Culwell says. What&#8217;s more, having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/bv\/stdfact-bacterial-vaginosis.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BV can increase the likelihood of acquiring sexually transmitted infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, or HIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, it&rsquo;s important to note that if the discharge is accompanied by severe symptoms of pain, a trip to the ER may be necessary. &ldquo;When in doubt, call the hospital and ask to speak to the physician on call,&rdquo; Dr. Culwell adds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"clear-discharge-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear discharge during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noticing clear vaginal discharge while pregnant can indicate different causes, some of which are more serious than others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the more innocuous side of things, Dr. McElligott says clear discharge is often noted in pregnancy due to high levels of estrogen. She warns about seeing too much vaginal discharge, though. &ldquo;If you are pregnant and see large amounts of clear discharge, seek care right away, as this could be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newhealthadvisor.org\/Leaking-Amniotic-Fluid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amniotic fluid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-clear-discharge-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does clear discharge last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the clear discharge is related to the menstrual cycle, it may last about two weeks. But generally, how long the discharge lasts and the amount of vaginal discharge depends on the timing of the menstrual cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear discharge is more common during the first two weeks of the cycle (the first couple weeks after a period ends). With vaginal infections, the answer isn&rsquo;t set in stone. &ldquo;Both yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis can resolve on their own, or they can persist until treated,&rdquo; Dr. Culwell says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, after treatment starts, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/yeast-infection\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20379004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a yeast infection will last around three to seven days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/3963-bacterial-vaginosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial vaginosis will last around seven days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&mdash;although up to 15% of people with BV will need a second course of treatment to clear the infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it may be difficult to wait for symptoms to subside, it&rsquo;s important to avoid douching in hopes of making the discharge go away faster. Douches can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/douche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually worsen the situation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, since it kills good bacteria and can lead to infection.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"most-importantly-see-a-doctor-if-clear-discharge-is-accompanied-by-pain-burning-itching-or-irritation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, see a doctor if clear discharge is accompanied by pain, burning, itching, or irritation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear discharge causes include normal bodily functions or infections, like yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis. The causes of clear discharge may resolve on their own if they are &ldquo;normal&rdquo; causes. However, if clear discharge lasts longer than two weeks, worsens, or is accompanied by burning, itching, pain, or irritation, it could be a sign of an infection that requires treatment.
