Soothes skin irritation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever come across marshmallow root salves, ointments, balms, or creams, there\u2019s a good reason. Marshmallow root extract has found its way into topical skincare products because of its purported skin health benefits, which are largely linked to its antioxidant content, Volpe suggests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33034099\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a topical cream containing 1% marshmallow root was found to be more effective than 1% hydrocortisone cream in the treatment of atopic dermatitis (aka eczema) in children. Given its anti-inflammatory properties, it\u2019s no surprise that marshmallow root may reduce inflammation and irritation in other inflammatory skin diseases. In addition to eczema, marshmallow root ointments <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3834722\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce skin irritation and treat mild folliculitis (inflammation of a hair follicle).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-improves-leaky-gut\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Improves leaky gut<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaky gut syndrome isn\u2019t formally recognized as a medical diagnosis, but it\u2019s associated with gas, bloating, and indigestion, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22724-leaky-gut-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Researchers are beginning to explore the possible wound-healing benefits of herbal medicines like marshmallow root, and the outlook is promising. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4418059\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, topical marshmallow root has been shown to kill bacteria in a way that resembles antibiotics and accelerates the wound-healing process.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-may-have-anticancer-properties\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Reducing oxidative stress from ultraviolet light could reduce the risk for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/media\/stats-skin-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common type of cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States: skin cancer. Along with routine sunscreen use, antioxidant-rich skincare ingredients like marshmallow root could support skin health and prevent cancer-causing skin damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, researchers have begun looking into the potential anticancer health benefits of marshmallow root. It may help prevent or reduce the growth of liver tumors, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10420783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-provides-prebiotics-to-the-gut\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Provides prebiotics to the gut<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has an ecosystem of microbes that live in their gut, known as the gut microbiome. Some microbes are helpful, such as probiotics, while others are harmful. Supports the urinary tract<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshmallow root has antibacterial properties, which may help fight infections throughout the body. Namely, marshmallow root <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10008376\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to inhibit bacteria in the urinary tract\u2014keeping the bladder clean, soothing bladder inflammation, and stopping urinary bleeding. It\u2019s also a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4625652\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended herbal treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for painful bladder syndrome and pelvic pain, and it may possess diuretic properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"marshmallow-root-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshmallow root side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether taken orally or applied topically, it\u2019s important to be mindful of any side effects associated with using supplements, including marshmallow root. However, the use of marshmallow root is generally considered safe and not associated with many side effects, Dr. Melamed says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Volpe, many of the side effects of marshmallow root involve the digestive tract. \u201cMarshmallow root can worsen symptoms such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea,\u201d she says, adding that this is especially true for people with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since much of the scientific research on marshmallow root involves animal studies, there aren\u2019t any clear guidelines surrounding the safety of marshmallow root supplements and products. While it appears safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women, you should check with your healthcare provider before taking any new herbal supplement or medicinal plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-marshmallow-root-interfere-with-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does marshmallow root interfere with medications?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since marshmallow root coats the lining of the stomach, it can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/herb\/marshmallow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interfere with the absorption of some medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are minor interactions with antiplatelet drugs, which could increase the risk of bleeding,\u201d Dr. Melamed explains. \u201cIt\u2019s also not recommended to use marshmallow root prior to surgery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reduce any interactions between marshmallow root and other medications, Volpe recommends spacing them out. \u201cPeople should take marshmallow root at least an hour apart from any and all medications,\u201d she says. \u201cOtherwise, the thick, demulcent constituents could potentially reduce the absorption and effectiveness of the medication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-marshmallow-root-is-a-versatile-supplement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Marshmallow root is a versatile supplement<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshmallow root is a versatile and powerful supplement. You can drink it in tea, take oral capsules, or apply it topically. Ultimately, it\u2019s still a supplement and should be treated as such.
