Prilosec (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omeprazole#coupon-prices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a commonly used over-the-counter (OTC) heartburn medication. It&#8217;s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/proton-pump-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proton pump inhibitor drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PPI), which means it reduces stomach acid production. PPIs are also used to treat ulcers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, not all drugs are safe for pregnant people. So, is it safe to take omeprazole during pregnancy? Research suggests that, in many cases, yes. But you could also try antacids, sleeping with your head elevated, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gerd-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoiding fatty or spicy foods.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is what you should know about taking omeprazole while pregnant&mdash;and alternative drugs or natural remedies for pregnancy-related acid reflux.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-omeprazole-while-pregnant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take omeprazole while pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no definitive studies on the safety of omeprazole use during pregnancy. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2012\/019810s096lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not offer any warning against using it to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/acid-reflux-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acid reflux during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, that does not mean it is risk-free, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newbeginningsobg.com\/provider\/staci-l-mchale-md-facog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staci McHale, MD, FACOG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist at New Beginnings OB-GYN in Las Vegas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&rsquo;s a reason OB-GYNs do not recommend the use of omeprazole in early pregnancy: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1365-2036.2005.02306.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that PPIs such as omeprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, and rabeprazole can cross the placenta. This means that when a pregnant person takes omeprazole, the drug may pass through the boundary between their body and the developing fetus, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15170365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potentially affecting the baby&#8217;s health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-risks-of-taking-omeprazole-while-pregnant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the risks of taking omeprazole while pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though omeprazole can cross the placenta, research has not found that it causes harm to the developing fetus. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21105793\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2010 Danish study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of data from 840,968 live births, babies exposed to PPIs during the first trimester of pregnancy had no increased prevalence of major birth defects compared to those who were not exposed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pregnant person taking omeprazole is still at risk of experiencing side effects. Common possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/omeprazole-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of omeprazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/types-of-headaches\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain or nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diarrhea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flatulence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper respiratory infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-constipation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These common side effects rarely present a serious health risk to a pregnant woman. However, diarrhea and vomiting can both contribute to dehydration. Dehydration during pregnancy can cause serious complications, including premature labor, low birth weight, and low breast milk production, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanpregnancy.org\/womens-health\/dehydration-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Pregnancy Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3966174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say there is no risk to the baby if a mother takes omeprazole while pregnant&mdash;but your healthcare provider might not consider it safe for you to take omeprazole until the second trimester of pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s always best to check with your healthcare provider since any drug that crosses the placenta has the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to affect fetal development. And even if your provider gives you the green light to take omeprazole, you should stop taking it and consult them if you start to experience serious side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-i-take-instead-of-omeprazole-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I take instead of omeprazole during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every body and every pregnancy are different. Ultimately, it&#8217;s a good idea to ask your healthcare provider which heartburn or gastrointestinal treatment is best for you, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjmed.com\/assets\/documents\/gme\/pharmacy-residency\/sjhs-pharmacy-residency-faculty-roster-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blair Gingerich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., BCMTMS, a clinical care and retail pharmacist in northern Indiana. &#8220;Obstetricians are best suited for recommending over-the-counter medications for the specific needs of each patient,&#8221; she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, safe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36107559\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acid reflux medications for pregnant women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include antacids such as calcium carbonate (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tums\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tums<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and OTC acid reducers such as H2 antagonists (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/famotidine\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famotidine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pepcid\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pepcid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), as well as prescription sucralfate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/antacid\/what-is#overview\"><b>Antacids<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are used to treat upset stomach, heartburn, and gas. While the use of PPIs like omeprazole reduces stomach acid production, antacids simply neutralize the acid in your stomach. This makes them the fastest-acting heartburn treatment. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9066781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A meta-analysis of existing research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that your healthcare provider should set antacid use frequency since calcium may cross the placenta, and high levels of calcium may cause damage to the maternal kidneys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/h2-antagonists\"><b>H2 receptor antagonists<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also called H2 blockers, are also a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-heartburn-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common heartburn treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Like PPIs, H2 blockers reduce stomach acid production, says Dr. Gingerich. H2 blockers work more quickly than PPIs, but PPIs provide longer-lasting relief. &ldquo;[Omeprazole] is a much more complete acid block than H2 blockers,&rdquo; Dr. Gingerich explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sucralfate\"><b>Sucralfate<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a prescription medication that coats the lining of the stomach, creating a protective barrier against the acidic environment. When taken three times daily, it can reduce heartburn symptoms without causing adverse effects to the fetus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"natural-remedies-for-acid-reflux-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural remedies for acid reflux during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to antacids and H2 antagonists, there are a number of natural remedies that expectant mothers can try to treat their acid reflux. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try some ginger: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This well-known <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4818021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herbal remedy for nausea and gastric distress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is safe to eat while pregnant.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Change your eating schedule. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating frequent small meals instead of two or three big ones may help prevent indigestion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay upright. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. McHale recommends sitting upright for three hours after eating and sleeping with your head elevated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sip chamomile: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking chamomile tea before bedtime may help soothe the digestive tract and reduce GERD discomfort, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/herbal-remedies-for-heartburn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid trigger foods and beverages. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomatoes, citrus, and fatty or fried foods can all contribute to acid reflux. Avoiding coffee, tea, citrus drinks, and carbonated beverages is also best.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if your acid reflux is terrible while expecting, don&rsquo;t despair. There are many pregnancy-safe treatments to try.
