It is also used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for other forms of anxiety, like agoraphobia, panic disorders, and acute <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/vertigo-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vertigo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> episodes. Alprazolam is an important member of the armamentarium of medications for mental health disorders. Still, it is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prescribing-controlled-substances\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and comes with the risk of drug abuse and physical dependence. Abruptly stopping alprazolam in those with physical dependence can result in withdrawal symptoms, like restlessness, insomnia and other sleep disturbances, irritability, and poor concentration. Alprazolam also causes central nervous system (CNS) adverse effects like sedation, drowsiness, fatigue, and confusion, so many drug interactions will arise when used with other medications with similar effects, including opioids. Combinations of opioids with benzodiazepines should be done judiciously and potentially only under conditions with close monitoring of the individual by a medical professional, given the life-threatening implications.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"selective-serotonin-reuptake-inhibitors-ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNS depressants like alprazolam may enhance the adverse and sometimes toxic effects of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If the combination cannot be avoided, individuals and their caregivers should be educated on the risk of increased symptoms of anxiety disease while receiving the combination.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"miscellaneous-cns-depressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miscellaneous CNS depressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other CNS depressants, like skeletal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/muscle-relaxants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle relaxants <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and sleep aids like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zolpidem-tartrate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zolpidem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can also increase the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34328644\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of injuries due to falls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and hospitalization among older adults, especially when taken in combination with benzodiazepines.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"azole-antifungals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azole Antifungals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antifungals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azole antifungals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are considered moderate to strong inhibitors of CYP3A4, a hepatic enzyme responsible for alprazolam&rsquo;s metabolism from its pharmacologically active state to therapeutically inactive metabolites that are then eliminated from the body. Considerations of alternate agents should be pursued, and if no alternatives are available, then individuals should be counseled on the interaction and its implication on increased side effects related to the benzodiazepine.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alprazolam-food-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alprazolam food interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"alprazolam-and-grapefruit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alprazolam and grapefruit <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/grapefruit-juice-with-medicine-other-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its juice interact with many prescription drugs. It is known through scientific studies to inhibit the enzyme CYP3A4 in the metabolism of many medications. CYP3A4 plays a role in metabolizing more than 65% of all drugs.
