They help us talk, exercise, meditate, cheer on our favorite team, tell that one joke that always gets mixed results, and do almost everything. And, even though we often take breathing for granted, lung cancer can make it pretty hard to forget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s one of the most prevalent cancers in the world, especially among older adults. But despite its well-earned reputation as a worrisome disease, its mortality rate is on the decline in the U.S. That\u2019s thanks in part to a decrease in cigarette smoking and in part to effective screening and new treatments. Here are all of the important lung cancer facts you need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-lung-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is lung cancer?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/cancer-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer starts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a single rogue cell. When that cell mutates, it may grow and divide faster than normal, forming tumors. Uninhibited, these cells will eventually spread to surrounding tissues. Cancer can affect any part of the body\u2014skin, bones, blood, organs, you name it. With lung cancer, this mutation occurs around the bronchus, bronchioles, alveoli, or other lung tissues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people consider it to be a smoker\u2019s disease, and for good reason. \u201cSmokers are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer than those who do not,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chevon-rariy-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Chevon Rariy, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chief Health Officer of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncologycarepartners.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oncology Care Partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, \u201cLung cancer is very heterogeneous and is being seen in younger individuals that are non-smokers. It can affect lots of different people of different health statuses,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/jack-f-jacoub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jack Jacoub, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Medical Director of the MemorialCare Cancer Institute at the Orange Coast and Saddleback Medical Centers. \u201cSo, it\u2019s a lung disease we must all consider.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common type of lung cancer is non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and it includes adenocarcinomas, squamous cell cancer, and large cell carcinomas. NSCLC spreads more slowly than other lung cancers, but it is still important to catch it early. By comparison, small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is faster-growing and more aggressive, but it\u2019s also less common. Both types of lung cancer can be difficult to distinguish from upper respiratory infections and chronic lung conditions in their early stages since they have similar symptoms, such as coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, and fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-lung-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is lung cancer?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the world. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/progressreport.cancer.gov\/after\/economic_burden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Cancer Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study, chemotherapy and radiation costs ranged from $4,242 to $8,287 per month during the initial six months of treatment. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6346221\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"causes-of-lung-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of lung cancer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the anti-smoking commercials, posters of toothless former smokers, and \u201csmoking kills\u201d taglines didn\u2019t make it clear enough, cigarettes are bad for you, and lung cancer is one of their most prominent consequences. Cigarette smoke is loaded with carcinogens, which can affect the lungs with every puff. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/lung\/basic_info\/risk_factors.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that smoking is linked to 80\u201390% of all lung cancer deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are several other risk factors for lung cancer. According to Dr. Rariy, \u201c[They] include long-term exposure to air pollution, asbestos, environmental factors like secondhand smoke, or radon. Also, genetics and family history can play a role in increasing the risk of lung cancer.\u201d Radon is lung cancer\u2019s second-leading cause, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nceh\/features\/protect-home-radon\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This colorless, odorless gas can rise up from soil and into buildings, so it\u2019s good practice to test both office buildings and homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lung-cancer-prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung cancer prevention<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no 100% foolproof way to prevent lung cancer, and that\u2019s because many lung cancer factors are genetic, according to Dr. Jacoub. \u201cYour genetic makeup and your disposition, or lack thereof, to cancer\u2014that&#8217;s out of your control,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019re completely defenseless against it. \u201cWhat <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in patients\u2019 control to reduce the risk of lung cancer is very much what&#8217;s in their control to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-prevent-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk of cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in general. It&#8217;s trying to maintain a reasonable body mass index, exercising, reducing alcohol intake, not smoking, and perhaps trying to eat a more plant-based diet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rariy concurs that people hoping to avoid lung cancer should \u201cquit smoking immediately, the sooner the better.\u201d She also recommends avoiding secondhand smoke, avoiding radiation exposure, testing homes for radon gas, avoiding asbestos, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and exercising regularly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early detection is also important. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/lung-cancer\/saved-by-the-scan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Lung Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, catching cancer before it spreads increases the five-year survival rate to 63%. \u201cWe hope that the diagnosis comes from screening in individuals who are at high risk for lung cancer because, in screening studies, you can find a spot in the lung and pursue that and make a diagnosis at a very early stage. And, that is the most critical factor in terms of curability,\u201d says Dr. Jacoub.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/uspstf\/recommendation\/lung-cancer-screening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an annual lung cancer screening\u2014including a low-dose CT scan\u2014for people ages 50 to 80 years who have a 20-pack-year smoking history (those who smoked a pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 10 years) and currently smoke or quit smoking in the past 15 years. Many healthcare providers also recommend that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anyone <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a 20-pack-year smoking history get screened regularly, regardless of age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-lung-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating lung cancer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/lung-cancer-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung cancer treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is exceptionally complex. Oncologists have various options at their disposal. \u201c[Developing a treatment plan] involves taking a number of factors into consideration\u2014lung cancer type, stage, patient-specific factors like age, overall health status, and patient preferences,\u201d says Dr. Rariy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, doctors will determine the stage of the cancer by seeing where, if anywhere, it has spread. The next step is a biopsy and molecular profiling. \u201c[These] define the genetic makeup of the cancer cell and which genes are turned on and off, plus which are more active and which are not active,\u201d per Dr. Jacoub. This step is fundamental for nearly every case of lung cancer since it allows the healthcare provider to tailor the treatment to the specific patient. From there, the treatment progression depends on the stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"stages-1-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stages 1\u20132<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for stage one or two lung cancer starts with surgery to remove the tumor and sample the lymph nodes. After that, additional treatment options, such as \u200b\u200btargeted therapies, chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapies, can improve the cure rate. If the patient is too frail to go under the knife, doctors may use stereotactic radiosurgery instead, which sends a beam of radiation directly to the tumor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"stage-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 3<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, in this stage, the oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, and pulmonologist will collectively decide the best course of action. \u201cThere&#8217;s a sequence that has to be discussed because stage three is a basket of different issues that each has to be addressed,\u201d says Dr. Jacoub. \u201cYou don&#8217;t just get radiation. You don\u2019t just get surgery. You don&#8217;t just get drug therapy. You need multi-modality care, where you&#8217;re receiving multiple different types of therapies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"stage-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 4<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this stage, the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, and Dr. Jacoub says it\u2019s beyond a total cure. However, he explains, \u201cTreatment offers substantial benefit to patients. They live much longer if they receive treatment than if they do not.\u201d This treatment is typically founded on drug therapy\u2014either a targeted oral agent, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, or some combination thereof.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lung-cancer-questions-and-answers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung cancer questions and answers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>What are the odds of surviving lung cancer?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the five-year survival rate is around 26%. However, it varies depending on how early it\u2019s diagnosed. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/lung-cancer\/detection-diagnosis-staging\/survival-rates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the five-year survival rate was 65% between the years 2012 and 2018 for localized (not spread) cases. This 5-year survival rate dropped to 37% for regional cases (spread a little) and 9% for distant cases (spread a lot).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are the stages of lung cancer?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung cancer has four stages:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage I: The cancer has penetrated the lung tissues but hasn\u2019t reached the lymph nodes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage II: The cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage III: The cancer has spread beyond the lymph nodes and further into the chest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage IV: The cancer has escaped the chest cavity and begun to affect other organs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How common is lung cancer in non-smokers?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 10\u201320% of lung cancer cases in the U.S. occur in people who have never smoked or smoked less than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/lung\/nonsmokers\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our lungs do a lot.
