Luckily, you can help prevent hyperkalemia by adjusting your diet to avoid high-potassium foods (like dried fruit, bananas, avocados, and tomatoes) and eating lower-potassium foods (such as apples, berries, lettuce, peppers, pasta, and rice).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"high-potassium-foods-to-avoid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-potassium foods to avoid<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have CKD, your healthcare provider may suggest a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renal diet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Belcher<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, Ph.D., a nephrology specialist and Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. Renal diets help protect you from kidney damage by limiting the following:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sodium: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too much sodium can be bad for anyone. Reducing sodium intake is especially important for people with chronic kidney disease because salt plays a key role in the development of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7369961\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension in people with CKD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Reducing salt can also reduce your risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Phosphorus: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phosphorus is another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/chronic-kidney-disease\/expert-answers\/food-and-nutrition\/faq-20058408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food to limit if you have CKD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Like potassium, phosphorus is a mineral filtered out of the body through the kidneys. When you have kidney disease, your kidneys cannot perform at their best. This can lead to an unhealthy buildup of phosphorus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Potassium: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting potassium intake to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/low-potassium-diet-beyond-the-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 3,000 mg daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means people with moderate to severe CKD can take control of their health and reduce their risk of developing hyperkalemia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what should you avoid if your potassium is high? High-potassium foods, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these foods have more than 200 mg of potassium per serving\u2014and some of them might surprise you. <\/span><a But for people with kidney disease, too much potassium can be dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what amount of potassium is safe for CKD? And how much is too much? According to Dr. Belcher, there\u2019s no set answer to those questions. \u201cIt needs to be individualized,\u201d he explains. Low potassium levels can be just as dangerous as high potassium levels.
