With such skyrocketing popularity, Americans looking to get their hands on Ozempic might wonder whether they\u2019ll be able to afford it. The truth is that its prices can vary depending on several factors, including insurance coverage. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pirg.org\/articles\/the-real-price-of-medications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that prescription drug prices can vary by up to a few hundred dollars between retailers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M18-1138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate study published in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surveyed 68,353 pharmacies across 16,325 ZIP codes and concluded that independent pharmacies and small chains typically charge higher prices than larger chains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, brand-name drugs have generic options that cost less, but there\u2019s currently no approved generic semaglutide, which is Ozempic\u2019s active ingredient. Plus, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/medications-containing-semaglutide-marketed-type-2-diabetes-or-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the FDA issued a warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about using unauthorized medications from dubious sources that promote themselves as a generic version of the drug. That said, there are some safe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternatives to Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that may come at lower prices or offer better insurance coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-medicare-cover-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Medicare cover Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults who are enrolled in original Medicare (Parts A and B) have the option to add a stand-alone Part D plan to their coverage, which helps pay for certain prescription drugs. People enrolled in Medicare Advantage (Part C) usually have a plan that includes drug coverage. Although each plan has its list of approved prescription medications, Medicare Part D will cover a variety of anti-diabetic drugs, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/publications\/11022-medicare-coverage-of-diabetes-supplies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare\u2019s official diabetes coverage guide,<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and that may include Ozempic prescribed for diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/OP_Home\/ssact\/title18\/1860D-02.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">law from 2003<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prohibits Medicare Part D from covering weight loss drugs, which means it doesn&#8217;t cover <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-ozempic-for-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic prescribed solely for weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use. This was due to the fact that weight loss medications were considered cosmetic, and obesity wasn\u2019t considered a chronic disease back then, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/buildmybod\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan Kaplan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificheightsplasticsurgery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific Heights Plastic Surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThere is federal legislation with bipartisan support for obesity medication coverage, but it&#8217;s simply too expensive. Estimates show that if you cover only 10% of Medicare beneficiaries with obesity, it would cost 9.35% of the entire Medicare Part D budget,\u201d Dr. Kaplan says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone wants to treat morbid obesity and also has Type 2 diabetes, though, a Medicare plan may cover Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-i-take-ozempic-if-im-not-diabetic\/\"><b>Can I take Ozempic if I\u2019m not diabetic?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare coverage of obesity drugs in 2026<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Nov. 6, 2025, President Donald Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-wegovy-zepbound-drug-prices-15b24e03d558aa6bbcf37e52ba2d354e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the manufacturer of Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, agreed to lower the prices that Americans pay for the drug. According to the announcement, Medicare coverage for Ozempic would expand to obesity, not just Type 2 diabetes. Eligible Medicare beneficiaries would only be responsible for a $50 copay per month, although no official announcement from the White House or Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been made as of December 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"factors-influencing-medicare-coverage-of-ozempic-for-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors influencing Medicare coverage of Ozempic for diabetes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, Medicare spent more than $4.6 billion to cover Ozempic for 780,253 beneficiaries, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.cms.gov\/summary-statistics-on-use-and-payments\/medicare-medicaid-spending-by-drug\/medicare-part-d-spending-by-drug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, each Medicare Part D plan is different, so they may have different requirements for Ozempic coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, certain private health insurers have buckled down on their coverage of Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications, implementing additional policies that may complicate the process. For example, some plans may require prior authorization, which means a doctor must send the prescription to the insurance provider for approval before the patient receives coverage. Other plans may require Medicare beneficiaries to try other medications (or even diets) first before they cover Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each Medicare prescription drug plan has a formulary, which is a list of all the medications it covers, along with dosages, copays, and alternatives. Each tier has defined copayments and out-of-pocket costs, and most often, the lower the tier, the lower the cost. It\u2019s designed to reduce expenses for Medicare beneficiaries who have a limited income and Medicare Part D. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Extra Help isn\u2019t the only program available. The Medicare website has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/plan-compare\/#\/pharmaceutical-assistance-program\/states\/?year=2024&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a search tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for finding state-specific programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"look-for-discounts-from-the-manufacturer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for discounts from the manufacturer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk has a Patient Assistance Program (PAP) that helps uninsured people below 400% of the federal poverty level access Ozempic for free, as long as they meet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novocare.com\/diabetes\/help-with-costs\/pap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all the requirements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
