Does Medicaid cover Ozempic?<\/h2>\n

Across most states, Medicaid will cover Ozempic when it\u2019s prescribed for Type 2 diabetes, its FDA-approved use. Yet Medicaid drug coverage is much rarer for patients using Ozempic for weight loss, since it\u2019s not an approved use. Of course, Medicaid policies vary across state lines, and some states might also have prior authorization requirements, so Ozempic coverage under Medicaid depends on where you live.<\/p>\n

Plenty of people use Ozempic for its proven weight management benefits<\/a>, but the FDA hasn\u2019t approved it for obesity treatment, and Medicaid usually only covers medications when they treat an approved health condition.<\/p>\n

Ozempic for Type 2 diabetes<\/h3>\n

\u201cIn my experience, Medicaid patients are much more likely to get coverage for Ozempic when it\u2019s being prescribed for Type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss alone,\u201d says Fernando Ovalle Jr., MD<\/a>, an obesity medicine specialist and contributor to Drugwatch.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Federal law requires that Medicaid cover medically necessary medications, and when it\u2019s prescribed for blood sugar management in patients with Type 2 diabetes<\/a>, Ozempic generally fits the bill. Most state Medicaid programs will cover it for diabetes, but that coverage might require prior authorization<\/a>. This is the process by which insurance providers determine whether a certain drug or brand is truly necessary, and it may include step therapy<\/a>, which involves trying lower-cost medications before moving on to Ozempic.<\/p>\n

Ozempic for weight loss<\/h3>\n

Here\u2019s where it gets tricky. \u201cObesity coverage through Medicaid is still very inconsistent across the country, and many patients are surprised to learn that treatment coverage can be limited,\u201d Dr. Ovalle says. In many states, Medicaid programs won\u2019t cover Ozempic for weight loss, since it\u2019s not an approved use. In fact, only 13 states<\/a> currently cover a GLP-1 drug for weight loss, and those programs typically require prior authorization. Even then, it\u2019s usually not Ozempic that Medicaid will cover, but a drug like Wegovy, which is a separate semaglutide drug that\u2019s FDA approved for weight management.<\/p>\n\t\t

Does Medicaid cover Ozempic in every state?<\/h2>\n

Coverage varies depending on the state and your reason for taking Ozempic. Most states will cover it for Type 2 diabetes, although each state has different prior authorization criteria, quantity limits, and other coverage rules. Plus, state formularies change quite often, so your best bet for determining coverage is contacting your state\u2019s Medicaid program<\/a> or asking your healthcare provider.<\/p>\n

Does Medicaid require prior authorization for Ozempic?<\/h2>\n

According to Dr. Ovalle, \u201cmost Medicaid plans require fairly extensive documentation.\u201d And those requirements can include \u201ca diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, recent A1C levels or lab documentation, proof that other medications (such as metformin) were tried first, body mass index (BMI) documentation, and chart notes supporting medical necessity.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re interested in Ozempic for obesity, these requirements can be even more complicated. \u201cPlans may also ask for documentation of weight-related conditions like sleep apnea, hypertension, or fatty liver disease,\u201d Dr. Ovalle says. \u201cA lot of the process comes down to proving both medical necessity and that the patient meets the plan\u2019s specific criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even when you complete any necessary requirements, the Medicaid program still might deny your request, in which case, you and your healthcare provider can file an appeal. Since the healthcare provider is heavily involved in the process, it\u2019s important to work closely with them throughout.<\/p>\n

How much does Ozempic cost with Medicaid?<\/h2>\n

If your state\u2019s Medicaid program covers your Ozempic, your copay will likely be $0\u2013$4, depending on the state. Each state has different copay limits<\/a> for Medicaid beneficiaries, but they rarely ever exceed a few dollars. And that\u2019s significantly lower than Ozempic\u2019s out-of-pocket cost<\/a> without insurance or other savings, which is around $1,395 per 3ml prefilled 2mg\/3ml pen on average, or $816 with SingleCare coupons. What if Medicaid doesn’t cover Ozempic?<\/h2>\n

Another option is to ask about one of the other GLP-1 agonists available<\/a>. There are now several GLP-1s approved for either Type 2 diabetes or weight management, like Mounjaro, Zepbound, Saxenda, Rybelsus, and Victoza. Certain Medicaid programs or health insurance plans may prefer one over the others. Just be sure to consult your healthcare provider about which might work best for you.<\/p>\n

Ozempic\u2019s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, also has a patient assistance program that provides free medications to eligible patients. You only qualify, however, if you meet the income requirements and have Medicaid or no insurance at all. You won\u2019t qualify if you have any other federally funded assistance. So if you have Medicaid, it\u2019s not an option.<\/p>\n

Commercially insured patients can take advantage of the Ozempic savings card, which can provide the drug for as low as $25 per month<\/a>. But you can\u2019t enroll if you receive assistance from any federal or state-funded program, like Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, or VA benefits.<\/p>\n
