It&rsquo;s often used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adhd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but a doctor may also prescribe it as an effective treatment for narcolepsy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-effects-on-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall works as a central nervous system stimulant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that increases levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters, in the brain. Further, some of the unwanted effects of this stimulant medication are specific to women. Martinez, MD, Ph.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the lead psychiatrist at Donefirst.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea, headaches, dizziness, and decreased appetite are also side effects that are typically prominent in women, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sasha-hamdani-21b81420a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sasha Hamdani, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a psychiatrist and ADHD clinical specialist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pakconline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychiatry Associates of Kansas City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/10826084.2016.1240694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance Use &amp; Misuse<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared similar results, finding female prescribed users reported appetite, bodily, and anxiety-related side effects more often than male-prescribed users.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"adderall-side-effects-in-females-sexually\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall side effects in females sexually<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as the sexual side effects of Aderrall in females, more conclusive research is needed. Dr. Hamdani also says that more or less sexual desire is possible when taking Adderall. Dr. Martinez agrees about noticing decreased libido and adds the possibility of delayed orgasms. However, she believes this only happens in rare cases and is generally unlikely. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcpress.mayoclinic.org\/women-health\/treatment-for-low-libido\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low libido is possible with Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it isn&rsquo;t known how often this happens.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased libido could be a side effect of ADHD in itself, without medication. In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/ppc.12480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small study published in 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, females with ADHD reported lower sexual desire and overall satisfaction than males with ADHD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-adderall-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Adderall in females<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s important to note that some side effects of Adderall are serious. Call your doctor immediately or get emergency medical attention for serious side effects such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A heartbeat that&rsquo;s either fast, slow, pounding, or uneven<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fingers and toes feeling numb, cold, pale, or painful, or having unexplained wounds on them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An allergic reaction, which could include itching or hives, swelling in the face or hands, swelling or tingling in the mouth or throat, chest tightness, and trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing or hearing things that aren&rsquo;t there<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain or trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion, agitation, or unusual behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motor or verbal tics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"adderall-and-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall and weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people use Adderall as a weight loss drug, but doctors advise against doing so. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s important to note that Adderall should not be used for weight loss,&rdquo; Dr. Martinez says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is it unhelpful, but worse, it can be unsafe. &ldquo;You can gain tolerance to the effects, and it poses the risk of addiction and overdose if used in excess,&rdquo; Dr. Hamdani adds. Side effects she mentions are a rapid heart rate or arrhythmias, elevation in blood pressure, panic attacks, and weakening of the cardiac muscle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Adderall isn&rsquo;t approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-soon-do-adderall-side-effects-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How soon do Adderall side effects start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any time a doctor prescribes a new medicine, patients may wonder when the side effects will begin. Dr. Hamdani says they could start as quickly as within the first 10 minutes of taking the first dose, depending on the amount taken and timing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-adderall-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do Adderall side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the side effects are temporary in the sense that they usually occur only when a patient is taking the medication, according to Dr. Martinez. They may even go away with consistent use. The body typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/11766-adhd-medication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adjusts within a few weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Cleveland Clinic. Further, Dr. Martinez says, &ldquo;Many individuals become accustomed to the common side effects, but this is best determined while working with one&rsquo;s clinician.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as a day-by-day basis, patients experience the side effects most within two to four hours of taking the medication, according to Dr. Hamdani.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"long-term-side-effects-of-adderall-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term side effects of Adderall in females<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term side effects of Adderall are generally the same for males and females. However, females need to be aware of possible risks related to pregnancy. Some research published by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/meds\/treatingfortwo\/features\/keyfinding-ADHD-med-increase.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates a connection between taking ADHD medicine during early pregnancy and birth defects. However, this was one of the first few studies to look at ADHD medicine use among pregnant women, and more research is needed. The CDC notes that there&rsquo;s still a &ldquo;very low risk&rdquo; of having a baby born with these defects after taking ADHD medicine. Women who are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant should speak with their healthcare providers about whether Adderall is safe to take during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other potential long-term side effects of Adderall include the following:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness or difficulty sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypertension (aka high blood pressure)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth suppression in children&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolerance of the medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An addiction to the medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation, impaired focus, anxiety, panic attacks, and&mdash;in extreme case cases&mdash;a psychotic episode<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little to no information is available regarding how many people are affected by those possible side effects. However, generally speaking, any permanent effects are unlikely, especially if Adderall prescriptions are taken as prescribed and not recreationally.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;If someone sustains side effects (such as cardiac issues or neurological problems) from excessive doses of Adderall, those would be considered adverse events, not side effects,&rdquo; Dr. Martinez says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, it&rsquo;s important to note that the risk of side effects does seem to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2015\/04\/28\/10\/06\/the-safety-of-stimulant-medication-use-in-cardiovascular-and-arrhythmia-patients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher for people with existing heart conditions, such as arrhythmias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adderall-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall can interact negatively with other drugs, foods, and drinks. Drugs in the following drug classes can increase amphetamine levels in the blood, thus increasing the risk of adverse effects:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proton pump inhibitors&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alkalinizing agents&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acidifying agents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CYP2D6 inhibitors such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fluoxetine) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paxil\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (paroxetine)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of amphetamine with other medications that increase serotonin can increase the risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about these medications so they can determine whether Adderall or an alternative is safer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as foods and drinks, a few to be aware of include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alcohol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing alcohol and Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lead to heart problems, high blood pressure, agitation, impaired judgment, difficulty sleeping, a higher risk for seizures, and blurred vision, among other side effects.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Coffee and other caffeinated beverages<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-and-caffeine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing these with Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may result in an usually fast or irregular heartbeat, trouble sleeping, irritability, anxiety, digestive issues, insomnia, and more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acidic fruits, such as grapefruit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: These can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which case a higher dose may need to be prescribed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"safety-measures-while-using-adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety measures while using Adderall<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall may be unsafe for people who have any of the following conditions:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced arteriosclerosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate to severe high blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptomatic cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaucoma&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperthyroidism&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A medical history of drug abuse or a future risk of misuse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity to amphetamines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of seizures or an abnormal brain wave test (EEG)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mental health condition such as psychosis, bipolar disorder, or Tourette syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of circulation issues in the fingers and toes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain populations may want to be careful with Adderall, too:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>People who are 65 years or older<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Adderall use hasn&rsquo;t been studied in this population, so talking to a doctor is recommended.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Research around safety hasn&rsquo;t been fully established, but the medication may lead to premature birth, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=aff45863-ffe1-4d4f-8acf-c7081512a6c0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall drug label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows no reports of adverse effects in a breastfeeding infant, but long-term effects are unknown. Additionally, large doses of amphetamine could inhibit milk production. In short, Adderall XR users are encouraged not to breastfeed while on the medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Adderall is FDA approved for use by children <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adhd-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ages 3&ndash;17. If the child is being treated for narcolepsy, Adderall is FDA approved once they&#8217;re 6 years old. However, note that growth suppression is a common side effect for this population when taking this medication.
