However, there is no scientific evidence that fish oil is more effective when taken in the morning versus at night. There may be individual reasons why someone would prefer to take supplements at a specific time of day, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few factors to consider when determining when to take your daily dose of fish oil supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Take it daily. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking any supplement at the same time each day helps it become a habit, so you\u2019re less likely to miss a dose. \u201cAs with any nutrient, fish oil needs to be continually provided to the body as it is used daily for metabolic functions,\u201d Dr. Maroon says. You should pick a time when you\u2019ll remember to take it, whether that\u2019s in the morning or at bedtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Take it with meals. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006291X88809379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A past study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a fat-containing meal may aid the body\u2019s ability to absorb omega-3 fatty acid supplements. However, newer formulations of fish oil supplements are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/co-clinicalnutrition\/abstract\/2019\/03000\/strategies_to_improve_bioavailability_of_omega_3.5.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efficiently absorbed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even when taking them without food<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, beyond aiding in absorption, taking fish oil capsules with food can reduce upset stomach, indigestion, and \u201cfishy burps,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hhd.psu.edu\/contact\/gregory-shearer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gregory Shearer, Ph.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professor of nutrition and physiology at Penn State University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Take it earlier in the day. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects of fish oil supplements are fishy burps and an upset stomach, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4664844\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did find that insomnia could be exacerbated. If you are worried about the medication interfering with your sleep, take it in the morning. Also, if you are prone to GI issues, such as acid reflux or GERD, you may want to take the supplement earlier so the burps or indigestion doesn\u2019t prevent you from falling asleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from if you are trying to get better z\u2019s, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you take fish oil is not influenced by the reason you are taking the supplement. For his patients, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurosurgery.pitt.edu\/people\/joseph-maroon\">Dr. Maroon<\/a> generally recommends 2 grams of high-quality fish oil containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) be taken daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much fish oil you need depends largely on your diet. If you regularly eat fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, or mackerel, you may not need to take a supplement. Shearer and other experts caution against treating it as a \u201cmedicine.\u201d While there is evidence it may help with certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omega-3-fish-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic health conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ultimately, fish oil is \u201cjust one member of a healthy team of nutrients,\u201d Shearer says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because dietary needs are so variable, it is always best to consult a healthcare provider before taking any supplement and ask what kind and amount is best for you. While it is very difficult to take too much fish oil, you may experience more severe side effects if you take a very high dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-fish-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take fish oil?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish oil is generally safe for adults, but you should consult your pediatrician before giving it to children. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should discuss fish oil with your OB-GYN, as the supplement&#8217;s safety is not well known.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also proceed with caution if you are taking blood thinners or similar medications. \u201cAt high doses, fish oil may alter the process of blood clotting,\u201d Dr. Maroon says. That is why he advises that anyone taking blood thinners or medications that alter blood clotting get the okay from their healthcare provider before taking fish oil supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, if you take fish oil, make sure to seek medical advice before any surgery or invasive procedure about whether you can continue to take omega-3 supplements or how close to the scheduled procedure you should stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, anyone with a seafood allergy should be cautious about taking fish oil supplements. While the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/resource\/food-allergies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Allergy, Asthma &amp; Immunology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that some small studies have found people with fish allergies to have little to no reaction to fish oil supplements\u2014likely because the protein content in these supplements is believed to be minimal and denatured\u2014the research is not rigorous enough. It\u2019s best to consult an allergist first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do have an allergic or adverse reaction to fish oil, immediately discontinue it and call a healthcare provider.
