Recent studies show oral ondansetron is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2306-7381\/11\/3\/112\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not well absorbed in dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing injections of ondansetron to be more often chosen by veterinarians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosages also vary depending on the source. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/multimedia\/table\/antiemetic-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merck Veterinary Manual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives a standard dose of 0.1\u20130.2 mg\/kg when given orally and 0.1\u20130.15 as an intravenous injection. These dosages appear elsewhere in veterinary literature as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plumbs.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plumb\u2019s Veterinary Drug Manual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lists the following ondansetron dosages for dogs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>For nausea or vomiting due to chemotherapy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 0.5\u20131 mg\/kg given by mouth every 8\u201312 hours OR 0.1\u20130.5 mg\/kg intravenous infusion every 8 hours or 30 minutes before administering cisplatin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>To control severe or frequent vomiting:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 0.1\u20131 mg\/kg intravenous injection every 8\u201312 hours\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>As an antiemetic:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 0.1\u20131 mg\/kg given by mouth every 12\u201324 hours OR 0.1\u20131 mg\/kg IV injections every 6\u201312 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ondansetron is often used for chemotherapy or serious vomiting, so there\u2019s a good chance a veterinary professional will administer most or all the doses. Pet parents sent home with ondansetron for dogs will be given either human versions of ondansetron or oral formulations prepared by a compounding pharmacy. Dosage forms include tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and liquid oral solutions. A compounding pharmacy can also make a transdermal gel to apply to the dog\u2019s skin, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1098612X16688807\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this may not be an effective way to give animals ondansetron.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-dogs-overdose-on-ondansetron\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can dogs overdose on ondansetron?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not give a pet too much ondansetron. Too much ondansetron <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/lookup.cfm?setid=834bc56a-657d-4733-9a60-47040cb5c7bf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has caused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sudden, short-lived blindness, low blood pressure, and severe constipation in human patients.
