Ozempic (semaglutide)<\/span><\/a> is an injectable prescription medication from a class of drugs called <\/span>glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists<\/span><\/a>. Although it initially garnered attention for its weight loss benefits and is prescribed <\/span>off-label<\/span><\/a> for weight loss, Ozempic has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for that purpose. Instead, it is FDA approved for controlling blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes, reducing cardiovascular risk, and controlling kidney disease. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ozempic prices can vary based on factors like insurance coverage and the reason for taking it. Plus, thanks to a discount from the drug\u2019s manufacturer, you may be able to get it for as little as $25 for a one-month, two-month, or three-month supply. Here\u2019s how.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How much does Ozempic cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ozempic isn\u2019t exactly cheap. Without insurance coverage, an Ozempic pen can cost $1,399 for a <\/span>28-day supply of a pen containing 3 milligrams (mg)<\/span><\/a> per dose. But this is just an average. Ozempic\u2019s out-of-pocket expenses depend on several factors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each pharmacy sets its own prices, which depend on factors such as location, overhead, and affiliations. In fact, <\/span>a study published in 2019<\/span><\/a> concluded that independent pharmacies and small chains typically charged higher cash (without insurance) prices than larger chains. As with many expensive prescription medications, there are ways to get Ozempic for much less.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ozempic cost with insurance<\/span><\/h3>\n

The most common way to save money on any prescription drug is by using health insurance, which can drastically drop the price. But that hinges on why the healthcare provider prescribed it. For example, many plans cover Ozempic prescriptions for Type 2 diabetes\u2014but not for weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, that\u2019s constantly changing, according to Sulagna Misra, MD, founder of <\/span>Misra Wellness<\/span><\/a>. She says some insurance companies that once covered Ozempic for obesity now might only cover Wegovy<\/a> instead\u2014or neither. Wegovy is a brand-name medication made by Novo Nordisk, the same manufacturer that makes Ozempic. Like Ozempic, Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide. The <\/span>main difference between the two<\/span><\/a> is that Ozempic is currently approved for Type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, and Wegovy is currently approved for weight management. (Both are also approved for cardiovascular risk reduction.) This may complicate insurance matters in some cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Further, Dr. Misra says many insurance plans now require prior authorization from the healthcare provider before approving weight loss drug coverage. And some will only cover one medication after the patient has tried other drugs or even certain diets. Relatively simple paperwork errors about the brand name or prior authorization requirements can be enough to deny a claim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Medicare, however, is a different story. <\/span>A 2003 law<\/span><\/a> prohibits government-sponsored plans like Medicare from covering weight loss medication. \u201cThis was due to the fact that weight loss medications and obesity were considered cosmetic and not a chronic disease state back then,\u201d says <\/span>Jonathan Kaplan, MD<\/span><\/a>, founder of <\/span>Pacific Heights Plastic Surgery<\/span><\/a> in San Francisco. \u201cThere is federal legislation with bipartisan support for obesity medication coverage, but it’s simply too expensive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though many formularies for Medicare Part D and private insurance <\/span>include Ozempic for diabetes<\/span><\/a>, cardiovascular risk reduction, or kidney disease, their copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance may vary. After insurance, beneficiaries may only end up paying a couple hundred dollars per month for Ozempic instead of over $1,000 when the drug is prescribed for Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The $25 offer for Ozempic<\/span><\/h2>\n

Insurance policies alone can provide significantly discounted prices, but NovoCare, through Novo Nordisk, may have an even better offer for insured patients. Recognizing the need for a more budget-friendly option, the manufacturer has introduced a discount card that can help patients with commercial or private insurance get Ozempic for as little as $25 for a one-, two-, or three-month prescription for up to 48 months.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More specifically, it\u2019s a maximum savings of $100 on a one-month prescription, $200 for a two-month prescription, or $300 for a three-month supply of Ozempic\u2014on top of your insurance coverage. So, not everyone will pay as little as $25\u2014it depends on your insurance company\u2019s coverage. Keep in mind, though, that program details can change at any time. Also, applicants have to meet <\/span>a few stipulations to qualify<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eligibility criteria for the Ozempic $25 coupon<\/span><\/h3>\n

First off, Novo Nordisk says qualified applicants must be enrolled in a private insurance plan, and that plan needs to cover Ozempic partially. It doesn\u2019t apply to anyone paying completely out of pocket. But it also won\u2019t apply if private insurance or another pharmacy benefits program covers the entire cost of Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, applicants are ineligible if they\u2019re enrolled in any state or federal program with prescription medication coverage. That includes Medicare, Medicaid, VA, DOD, and TRICARE coverage. The offer is only valid in the United States, it\u2019s not transferable to another person, and it lasts for a maximum of 48 months. The applicant is still responsible for all copayments and other fees issued by their health insurance policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to apply for the Ozempic $25 coupon<\/span><\/h3>\n

The application process itself is pretty simple. Go to the <\/span>Ozempic website<\/span><\/a> and click the button that says \u201cSign Up and Save.\u201d Or, text BEGIN to 21848 to get started.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The online form asks for standard information, like name, date of birth, and ZIP code\u2014but it also requests confirmation that you have a private insurance plan and that you\u2019re not on any government-sponsored health plans (such as Medicare or TRICARE).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If Novo Nordisk approves the application, you can print, download, or email yourself an Ozempic savings card, which you\u2019ll present to the pharmacist. Anyone who uses a mail-order pharmacy is eligible, too, although they\u2019ll have to purchase the medication first and then apply for reimbursement by sending their proof of purchase and insurance plan information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
