Whatever the reason, if you take any vitamin supplements on a regular basis, you\u2019re not alone: More than half of all Americans 20 and older report <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking one or more vitamins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to boost their overall health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vitamin industry is booming, but there\u2019s a lot of confusion about whether or not we\u2019re taking the right vitamins in the right ways (and if the way we\u2019re taking our vitamins allows us actually to reap all their potential health benefits). Part of the confusion comes from the wide variety of ways in which vitamins \u201cwork\u201d or are used and absorbed by the body. For example, if you started taking vitamin D last week, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-for-vitamin-d-to-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should it be working now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? And if it is, how can you tell?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many factors affect how fast a vitamin begins to work, including its formulation, your deficiency level, and how water-soluble it is. Read on to learn more about how your body processes the supplemental vitamins you take, what to expect when you start taking a new vitamin, and how to help your vitamins work better for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-your-body-use-vitamins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does your body use vitamins?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your body needs vitamins to perform a wide range of essential functions, from maintaining healthy skin and bones to strengthening the immune system, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehproject.org\/author\/kelsey-costa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelsey Costa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MS, RDN, dietitian and owner of Nutrition Insights. Whether a vitamin is fat- or water-soluble determines what your body does with that vitamin after you\u2019ve ingested it, as well as where it\u2019s processed and whether or not it&#8217;s stored long-term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Costa, water-soluble vitamins are absorbed in the intestines, transported by the cells there, and are not stored, so they need to be consumed on a regular basis; fat-soluble vitamins, however, use the dietary fat in your digestive system to spread out through the body, being stored in the liver, skeletal muscles, and fatty tissues for later use. That doesn\u2019t mean you won\u2019t ever need to replete your levels, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.colostate.edu\/topic-areas\/nutrition-food-safety-health\/fat-soluble-vitamins-a-d-e-and-k-9-315\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fat-soluble vitamins build up in your system and last much longer than water-soluble vitamins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-for-vitamins-to-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take for vitamins to work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It depends on what type of vitamin you\u2019re taking. Of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/vitamins-and-supplements\/vitamins-and-minerals-older-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 essential vitamins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most are water-soluble; only vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins are absorbed faster, with most being absorbed within a few hours after consumption, according to Costa. In contrast, fat-soluble vitamins can take weeks to take effect. However, depending on the amounts consumed, the time to maximum absorption can vary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamin-absorption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">factors can change a vitamin\u2019s rate of absorption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? How you take it (i.e., swallowing a pill versus drinking a powder stirred into water), any other foods or drinks you consume when you take it, other medications you\u2019re on, and certain GI conditions that affect how your intestines absorb nutrients can all affect a vitamin\u2019s absorption rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"factors-that-affect-vitamin-efficacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that affect vitamin efficacy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of overlap between the things that make a vitamin more effective and the things that affect a vitamin\u2019s absorption rate; after all, if you\u2019re not absorbing much of a vitamin, it\u2019s not going to work very well for you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amount of a nutrient your body can absorb and use is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3575927\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bioavailability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This isn\u2019t the same as how much of the nutrient is included in any particular vitamin you take; a single dose of vitamin C might have 500 milligrams, but that doesn\u2019t mean your body is using 500 milligrams of vitamin C with every tablet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some things that influence how much of a nutrient you absorb and use are out of your hands. However, you may be able to improve how well your vitamins work by paying attention to when and how you take them, as well as choosing the right formulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"current-vitamin-levels\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current vitamin levels<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a nutritional deficiency, taking a vitamin is a good way to increase your nutrient levels and see potentially quick, beneficial effects on your health. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But suppose you&#8217;re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deficient in a nutrient and are supplementing with it anyway. In that case, your body will either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hss.edu\/newsroom_how-much-vitamin-and-minerals.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not absorb it and flush it out of your system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in the case of water-soluble vitamins) or will hold onto all the excess nutrients, sometimes to your detriment (in the case of fat-soluble vitamins).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"type-of-vitamin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type of vitamin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To recap, the solubility of vitamins\u2014whether they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002399.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water-soluble or fat-soluble<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014plays a significant role in how long it takes for them to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Water-soluble vitamins <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like B-complex and C dissolve in water and are absorbed quickly, directly into the bloodstream. The body can\u2019t store them, so excess amounts are flushed out in your urine. Although you must consume them regularly, their effects can be more immediate. Their quick absorption and rapid excretion mean that if the body needs them, it can use them almost immediately\u2014but only to a specific point.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fat-soluble vitamins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as A, D, E, and K, must be consumed with dietary fats for absorption. Excess amounts can be stored in the liver and the body\u2019s fatty tissues for more extended periods. The types of formulations can make a difference in how well your vitamins work for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digestivereset.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inna Melamed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., functional medicine practitioner and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive Reset,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that liquid forms of vitamins often have a better absorption rate than pills, especially if you have any digestive issues that might slow down absorption time. Meanwhile, different compound forms of vitamins often have different absorption and efficacy rates. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Magnesium-HealthProfessional\/#en3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium citrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, is magnesium combined with citric acid, and it\u2019s generally absorbed well\u2014offering more bioavailability\u2014than magnesium oxide or magnesium combined with oxygen ions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you get older, your body becomes less effective at absorbing and using nutrients. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9903079\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 are especially difficult for older people to absorb. Additionally, older people are more likely to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK51837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions that affect how well nutrients are absorbed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as liver and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/kidney-disease-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They may also be more likely to be taking medications that can interfere with nutrient absorption. For example, calcium and iron should be taken separately from each other since calcium can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21462112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">block the absorption of iron<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The time of day you take your vitamins can also affect how well they work. Some vitamins, like magnesium, are known for relaxing muscles and aiding sleep, so it might be smart to take them at night. Vitamin D supplements, on the other hand, are often recommended as a morning vitamin, says Dr. Melamed, who notes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33549285\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D is a nutrient that works more like a hormone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is best taken at the start of your day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, take note of what type of vitamin you\u2019re consuming and what other dietary choices you\u2019re making: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/the-best-time-to-take-vitamins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some experts suggest taking water-soluble vitamins on an empty stomach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a large glass of water to help them be better absorbed, and taking fat-soluble vitamins with food, especially, food containing a healthy fat like avocado or fatty fish, to speed absorption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medications-and-health-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications and health conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many medications and several health conditions can affect how well your body absorbs nutrients. Taking antibiotics long-term, for example, can alter your gut bacteria and decrease the levels of B-complex vitamins in your body, says Costa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.msu.edu\/resources\/nutrient-depletion-is-an-often-overlooked-side-effect-of-some-medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications known to cause nutrient depletion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014which can include blocking the absorption of vitamins or increasing how much of the vitamin is flushed out of your system\u2014include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antiepileptic drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antacids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proton pump inhibitors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral contraceptives<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Costa says that people with digestive or gastrointestinal disorders and those who have had gastrointestinal surgery may also have difficulty absorbing nutrients. He explains that people with celiac disease or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ulcerative-colitis-vs-crohns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn&#8217;s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not be able to absorb fat-soluble vitamins as well as other people due to damage or inflammation in the small intestine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-create-an-effective-vitamin-regimen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to create an effective vitamin regimen<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get the most out of your supplement regimen, follow these tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Determine your specific needs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Work with a healthcare professional to assess your dietary intake and health goals to determine which vitamins you need.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Choose quality products:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Opt for vitamins that have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Business--Manufacturing\/Testing-Certification\/Lab-Accreditation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third-party tested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for quality and safety by independent laboratories approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCP).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stick to the recommended doses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To avoid vitamin deficiencies or toxicity, adhere to the suggested doses on the product label or your healthcare provider\u2019s advice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pay attention to solubility:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Remember to pair fat-soluble vitamins with foods containing healthy fats like olive oil or avocado and water-soluble vitamins with plenty of water. However, according to Dr. Melamed, the most common types of vitamin deficiencies are for nutrients like iron, B6, B12, magnesium, and vitamin D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the signs of deficiency vary for each of these vitamins, some common symptoms of vitamin deficiency include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry skin and\/or brittle nails<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re deficient in a nutrient, it may be easier to tell when your vitamins are working than if you\u2019re taking a vitamin for more general wellness purposes. That\u2019s because it may be easier to notice when you start to feel better. For example, says Dr. Melamed, if you\u2019re low in iron and start taking an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ferrous-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iron supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you might feel an increase in energy levels; if you\u2019re deficient in magnesium, you may see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-magnesium-for-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improvements in sleep habits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and bowel movements with supplementation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These improvements can happen quickly, often in just a few days, but keep in mind that the effects may not be permanent. Instead, you might perceive an increase in energy or a feeling of enhanced well-being, but be mindful that there may be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/10\/11\/e039119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affecting your perception of how much better you feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water-soluble vitamins, like vitamin C, B6, and B12, are absorbed quickly and easily but also don\u2019t remain in your system for very long. Fat-soluble vitamins are processed by your body\u2019s fat cells, which means it takes longer for them to work, but they can be stored and used for longer, too.
