It is one of the preferred pain relievers for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/experts-and-stories\/ask-acog\/is-it-safe-to-take-acetaminophen-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and breastfeeding individuals because it has been extensively studied and has a low risk of adverse effects when taken in recommended doses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tylenol-overdose-and-toxicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol overdose and toxicity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taken as directed, Tylenol is very safe, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/acetaminophen-take-it-safely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the National Poison Control Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even so, Tylenol overdose is one of the most common poisonings. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441917\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that Tylenol overdose causes 56,000 visits to the emergency department, 2,600 hospitalizations, and 500 deaths in the United States yearly. In 50% of cases, Tylenol overdoses are unintentional, occurring for the following reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals may take multiple medications containing acetaminophen, not knowing they contain the same ingredient. For example, many cold, flu, and allergy medicines, as well as OTC sleep aids, contain acetaminophen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients may take the maximum recommended amount of acetaminophen for several days or longer, causing a toxic buildup in their system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals who regularly drink alcohol, especially more than three drinks at a time, are at higher risk of an acetaminophen overdose, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dr911md.com\/bio.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Glatter, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor of emergency medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s because chronic drinkers are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5513682\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have impaired liver function from chronic liver conditions like cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) or fatty liver disease, adds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/medhat-f-mikhael\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medhat Mikhael, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pain medicine specialist and medical director of the Spine Health Center at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center, Fountain Valley, California<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019re also more likely to experience liver damage due to preexisting liver dysfunction, he points out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children may be at risk if caretakers use an adult formulation or do not carefully measure pediatric preparations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-drug-safety-communication-prescription-acetaminophen-products-be-limited-325-mg-dosage-unit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued a Boxed Warning (or black box warning) for acetaminophen, the highest safety warning a medication can have, due to the potential risk of severe liver injury. It emphasizes that individuals should not exceed the maximum daily dose of Tylenol (4,000 mg in adults over 150 pounds), take it with other OTC or prescription medications containing acetaminophen, or consume alcohol while using Tylenol. The FDA also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/dont-overuse-acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advises seeking immediate medical attention for the following symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark urine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-often-can-you-take-tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How often can you take Tylenol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mikhael points out that in cases of acute overdose, people may take too much at once without realizing the potentially harmful effects of Tylenol. Otherwise, liver damage and other serious effects can occur. Alternating acetaminophen with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for pain relief can help reduce the risk of dangerous side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cases of acetaminophen overdose, the first organ affected is the liver, says Dr. Mikhael. As toxicity becomes more advanced, patients will experience multisystem failure. \u201cThe kidneys shut down, the pancreas is inflamed, and it can become life-threatening,\u201d Dr. Mikhael explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news? Less than 1% of acetaminophen poisoning cases that end up in the emergency room cause death. \u201cFrom my clinical experience, most people do recover because they feel very sick and seek medical attention early on,\u201d says Dr. Mikhael.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-stages-of-acetaminophen-toxicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 stages of acetaminophen toxicity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid an acetaminophen overdose, it\u2019s important to spot the signs. There are four stages of acetaminophen toxicity, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stage 1: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 30 minutes to 24 hours after taking acetaminophen, patients are usually asymptomatic but may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspharmacist.com\/article\/acetaminophen-intoxication-a-criticalcare-emergency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or general malaise. The severity of symptoms in this preclinical stage will be directly correlated to the amount of acetaminophen ingested.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stage 2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In the second stage, about 18 to 72 hours after ingestion, Stage 1 symptoms may continue. Dr. Glatter says patients may also have upper right quadrant pain, hypotension (low blood pressure), and tachycardia (fast heart rate). In addition, laboratory values may begin to demonstrate evidence of hepatotoxicity. Many patients do not progress beyond this stage, especially if receiving medical care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stage 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 If toxicity has not been addressed 72 to 96 hours after taking acetaminophen, patients may progress to this hepatotoxic phase, where severe liver dysfunction may cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes), excess bleeding or blood clotting, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and central nervous symptoms like confusion due to a buildup of toxins in the blood. Liver failure, seizures, coma, and death may occur in critically ill patients who are not treated, says Dr. Glatter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stage 4:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During this recovery phase, the majority of patients who receive treatment will fully recover from symptoms and organ failure within four days to three weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When caught in its early stages, acetaminophen can be treated with oral or intravenous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetylcysteine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetylcysteine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, brand names <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetadote\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetadote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Mucomyst. When given within eight hours of ingestion, it is nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537183\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but can be used up to 48 hours after ingestion. Other treatments include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2014891\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activated charcoal <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(given within the first one to two hours of ingestion) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chp.edu\/our-services\/transplant\/liver\/education\/liver-disease-states\/acetaminophen-toxicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supportive care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as anti-nausea medication and IV fluids (as needed).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line-tylenol-lasts-four-to-six-hours\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line: Tylenol lasts four to six hours<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how long does Tylenol take to kick in?
