However, this unpleasant symptom can accompany <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> different conditions, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pink-eye-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conjunctivitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the medical term for pink eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value='{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}' data-sheets-userformat='{\"2\":6849,\"3\":{\"1\":0},\"9\":1,\"10\":2,\"12\":0,\"14\":{\"1\":2,\"2\":0},\"15\":\"Arial\"}' data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Conjunctivitis could stem from a viral infection, and when this occurs, someone may also have other symptoms such as fever, body aches, nasal discharge, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/coughing-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cough<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harborhealth.com\/clinicians\/id-molestiae-est-minus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgar Navarro Garza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified pediatrician at Harbor Health in Austin, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-pink-eye-cause-a-fever\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does pink eye cause a fever?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s not uncommon to have a fever with conjunctivitis. However, the fever is related to the triggering virus or bacteria&mdash;not the conjunctivitis itself, explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caseintegrativehealth.com\/copy-of-dr-kelley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan Murauski, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Director of Wellness Optimization and Longevity at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caseintegrativehealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case Integrative Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three main <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/conjunctivitis\/about\/causes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types of pink eye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Viral conjunctivitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an eye infection caused by a virus such as adenovirus (the common cold) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470271\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which also causes fever and sore throat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bacterial conjunctivitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an eye infection caused by bacteria that may have entered the eye through contact lens wear, air pollutants, or touching a contaminated surface before touching your eye.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Allergic conjunctivitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is eye irritation caused by a reaction to specific allergens, such as pollen or dust mites. It may be accompanied by sneezing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have viral or bacterial pink eye, the virus or bacteria causing your conjunctivitis may also cause fever. That&rsquo;s because fever is simply a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/fever\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352759?p=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign of immune system activation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You get a fever when your body is fighting against a virus or bacterial infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Garza, most conjunctivitis-related fevers resolve within 48 hours. He recommends consulting a healthcare provider if you have pink eye with a fever that lasts more than five days.Get medical advice at the onset of conjunctivitis to determine if you need to be seen.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-symptoms-of-pink-eye-with-a-fever\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the symptoms of pink eye with a fever?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink eye symptoms vary depending on the type. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis can cause a fever, but the most common cause of fever with pink eye is a virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with fever, &ldquo;patients may experience cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sinus congestion, or coughing. These may be followed by having one eye getting more watery than the other,&rdquo; says Nerissa Dimailig, APRN, an advanced practice registered nurse at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/valleyoaksmed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valley Oaks Medical Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Nevada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the infection sets in, you will experience some or all of these common pink eye symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watery eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/red-eyes-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red eyes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pink or redness of the white part of the eye)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy, irritated, or burning eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stickiness or crusting around the eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because viral and bacterial pink eye require different treatments, it is essential to determine which conjunctivitis you might have. &ldquo;Eye discharge with viral and allergic conjunctivitis is usually clear or mucoserous. The eye discharge on bacterial conjunctivitis is pus-like and thicker,&rdquo; says Dr. Garza.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-a-fever-with-pink-eye\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat a fever with pink eye<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Managing fever with and without pink eye will be the same, and that includes staying hydrated, using cool wraps, and taking a fever-reducing medication,&rdquo; says Dr. Garza. Common over-the-counter fever reducers include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (acetaminophen) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever is most common with viral pink eye. The pink eye will go away once the virus has run its course, usually within a couple of weeks. The following home remedies can be used to relieve symptoms of viral pink eye:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye massage with a washcloth soaked in warm water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warm compresses on the eye area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye lubricant drops (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/artificial-tears\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial Tears<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decongestant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eye-drops\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye drops<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding eye makeup and contact lens use<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink eye caused by a bacterial infection may not go away on its own. &ldquo;Bacterial conjunctivitis usually requires antibiotic treatment,&rdquo; says Dr. Murauski. With antibiotics, symptoms should improve in one to two days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"risk-factors-for-a-fever-with-pink-eye\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors for a fever with pink eye<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Those with weakened immune systems, such as young children and the elderly, are more at risk for developing a fever with conjunctivitis,&rdquo; says Dr. Murauski. &ldquo;Young children are vulnerable because their immune systems are not fully developed, making it harder for their bodies to fight off infections. The elderly may have weakened immune responses due to age, increasing their susceptibility.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viral conjunctivitis is very contagious, which is why it&rsquo;s so common in school and daycare settings. Avoid close contact with an infected person, practice frequent handwashing, and avoid sharing towels or pillowcases with anyone with pink eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-your-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most cases of pink eye go away on their own. But pink eye can become chronic, meaning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK541034\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it has not resolved after four weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dimailig suggests calling your healthcare provider if you experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain with eye movement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme sensitivity to light<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thick drainage from the eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eyelid swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Murauski says to consider a trip to the ER if these symptoms accompany your pink eye:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intense eye pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High fever<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While complications from pink eye are uncommon, they can be significant. Dr. Garza says eye pain along with pink eye could be a sign of elevated eye pressure, which can lead to vision loss. See an ophthalmologist or go to an emergency room immediately if you&rsquo;re experiencing eye pain and pink eye symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example of a dangerous complication is when a type of sudden-onset bacterial pink eye (called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10090984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary meningococcal conjunctivitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) turns into meningitis. Though rare, this is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition. If your pink eye develops very quickly or causes significant pain, contact your healthcare provider or be seen at the nearest ER to rule out meningitis-related conjunctivitis.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You&rsquo;re shivering one minute and sweating the next.
