But the Ozempic shortage is not the first of its kind. Drug shortages happen from time to time. Although the FDA has announced that the semaglutide shortage is now over, it&#8217;s important to understand current supply and demand and learn how to prepare for any future diabetes drug shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, two pharmacists unpack the reasons behind the Ozempic shortage, plus how to cope if you&#8217;re affected by a current or future prescription drug shortage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"introduction-to-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduction to Ozempic<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/what-is\">Ozempic<\/a> (semaglutide) is a once-weekly prescription medication that is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/209637s020s021lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help lower blood sugar in adults with Type 2 diabetes and lower their risk of cardiovascular events. But Ozempic has gone viral due to one of its side effects: weight loss. As rumors spread that celebrities have slimmed down with Ozempic, more nondiabetic patients are requesting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label prescriptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Ozempic, meaning they\u2019re using it for an indication it wasn\u2019t FDA approved for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-shortage-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic shortage causes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nabp.pharmacy\/news\/blog\/diabetes-drug-shortages-and-fake-ozempic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Association of Boards of Pharmacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, injectable medications with the active ingredient semaglutide, such as Ozempic and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">started experiencing supply shortages in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many reasons drugs get backordered, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harborhealth.com\/clinicians\/necessitatibus-magni-distinctio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie Pepin, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, clinical pharmacy program director at Harbor Health. Drug shortage causes may include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarcity of raw materials (ingredients)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supply chain issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems in the manufacturing lines, including contamination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quality control issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Label changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor projection of demand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small profit margins<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In the case of Ozempic, the demand for the drug increased, and the supply could not meet the demand,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christina-bookwalter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christina Bookwalter, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a clinical pharmacist practitioner in Minnesota.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not always possible to predict a situation like the Ozempic shortage. It&#8217;s also not always possible to know whether the supply of a previously backordered drug might dip again. Fortunately, shortages don&#8217;t last forever. Companies like Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic, can adapt by building more production lines or decreasing production of other drugs to produce a greater supply of the backordered drug, according to Dr. Pepin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the FDA announced on Feb. 21, 2025, that the semaglutide shortage was over. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it also stated that compounding pharmacies have a limited amount of time to cease compounding, distributing, and dispensing semaglutide injection products that are copies of FDA-approved products (e.g., Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus). The deadline for state-licensed pharmacies and physicians compounding under section 503B of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&amp;C Act) is April 22, 2025. In the short term, healthcare professionals must quickly find suitable alternative medications for patients. During an Ozempic shortage, for instance, people with Type 2 diabetes may need to switch to a different blood sugar-regulating medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another consequence is that physicians might not start newly diagnosed patients on Ozempic in the first place, according to Dr. Bookwalter. This could have long-term consequences for the profits of a drug manufacturer like Novo Nordisk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequences of an Ozempic shortage may also develop over time. Switching patients to a different medication sounds simple, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/americantherapeutics\/fulltext\/2017\/05000\/potential_clinical_and_economic_impact_of.6.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a research review in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Therapeutics<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the consequences of switching a brand-name medication to a generic include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-adherence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication adherence<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poorer clinical outcomes (e.g., symptom relief and overall health)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An increase in adverse clinical outcomes, such as hospitalization and even death<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, an Ozempic shortage increases the risk of harm to Type 2 diabetes patients who need this drug. &#8220;Taking these medications for vanity purposes or to quickly lose 5\u201310 pounds is negatively impacting the drug supply,&#8221; Dr. Pepin says. &#8220;The prescribing of these drugs by providers for this purpose should be discouraged.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-i-take-ozempic-if-im-not-diabetic\/\"><b>Can I take Ozempic if I\u2019m not diabetic?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"coping-with-ozempic-shortages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coping with Ozempic shortages<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several short-term solutions for patients and healthcare providers impacted by the Ozempic shortage:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Shop around at different pharmacies.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can try finding Ozempic in stock at a different reputable pharmacy, according to Bookwalter and Pepin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Find an Ozempic alternative.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;Depending on the patient, there are other alternatives or older medications in the same class that may work,&#8221; Dr. Pepin says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Double down on lifestyle modifications.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;If a person is newly diagnosed [with Type 2 diabetes] and not in a severe category of their disease, lifestyle modifications are always the first line of therapy,&#8221; Dr. Pepin says. However, she adds that this is not a suitable strategy for everyone. Patients with a severe lack of blood sugar control may still need insulin therapy in addition to diet restrictions and exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone prescribed Ozempic who cannot fill their prescribed 30- or 90-day supply should contact their healthcare provider rather than attempting to cope on their own. If you have Type 2 diabetes, delaying a necessary insulin injection can be deadly. Switching medications comes with a new risk of allergic reactions or other adverse effects. That&#8217;s why discussing your options with your healthcare provider is so important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic (semaglutide) is a prescription once-weekly injection intended to help regulate blood sugar levels in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because Ozempic can also cause weight loss, demand for it has grown, leading to a drug shortage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that shortage officially ended as of Feb. 21, 2025.
