It&rsquo;s also known by its brand names, Advil and Motrin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While melatonin and ibuprofen are primarily known for having different benefits, some may want to take them both. For example, after shift work or because of jet lag, individuals may feel achy or struggle to fall asleep at an unusual time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can melatonin and ibuprofen be taken together? The short answer is yes, but there is a disclaimer: NSAIDs like ibuprofen can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/supplement\/melatonin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower levels of melatonin secretion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the blood and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1996-29958-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alter body temperature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis when compared with a placebo, especially at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More concerning, though, is the use of melatonin with steroids, immunosuppressants, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlukeshealth.org\/resources\/5-harmful-medication-interactions-you-need-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SSRI) antidepressants, and blood pressure medications. Melatonin can reduce their effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-ibuprofen-with-melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take ibuprofen with melatonin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, it&rsquo;s okay to combine melatonin with ibuprofen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Melatonin and ibuprofen can generally be taken together without significant interactions, but it&rsquo;s always best to consult with your doctor before combining multiple medications or supplements,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mike-green-md-3b65a8110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Green, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chief medical officer and co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bywinona.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above, just be aware that NSAIDs can suppress melatonin production. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8848472\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physiology &amp; Behavior<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found this side effect when testing it out on 75 subjects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the interactions between melatonin and ibuprofen aren&rsquo;t all bad. Taking ibuprofen with melatonin can have benefits. They are sometimes used together, particularly for people who struggle to sleep due to pain. Ibuprofen helps with the pain, and melatonin works to improve sleep quality.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Sometimes, a doctor might suggest using them together if someone has trouble sleeping because of pain, but it&rsquo;s best to ask your doctor for advice before trying it yourself,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepadvisor.org\/dr-rajkumar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chief medical advisor for Sleep Advisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin supplements can help with pain in a way. &ldquo;There is some research suggesting that melatonin might also have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11268363\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could complement ibuprofen&rsquo;s effects on reducing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/inflammation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; Dr. Green adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-safe-to-take-ibuprofen-and-melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to take ibuprofen and melatonin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While combining ibuprofen and melatonin can be helpful, Dr. Green clarifies that doing so carries some risk. &ldquo;Ibuprofen can cause gastrointestinal irritation, ulcers, and bleeding, particularly when taken at high doses or for prolonged periods,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;Combining it with melatonin doesn&rsquo;t reduce these risks.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, he explains that both ibuprofen and melatonin can interact with other medications or supplements that a person might take, so it is best to get individualized medical advice beforehand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-melatonin\/art-20363071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interact with melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticoagulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, antiplatelet drugs, herbs, supplements, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticonvulsants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ace-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, central nervous system depressants, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/contraceptives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contraceptives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cytochrome P450 1A2 substrates, cytochrome P450 2C19 substrates, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvoxamine-maleate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluvoxamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, immunosuppressants, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seizure threshold-lowering drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s also important to note that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/melatonin\/effects-on-birth-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking birth control pills and melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> together may have adverse effects, such as headaches, extra daytime sleepiness, and dizziness. Additionally, taking warfarin (a blood clot medication) and melatonin together has a moderate risk, as melatonin can increase the side effects of warfarin. These are only a couple of examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a supplement, melatonin isn&rsquo;t approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. Dasgupta adds, and one of the effects of melatonin is its likelihood of causing drowsiness. Those are a couple of factors to be aware of, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But can a person <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-dosage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take too much melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Significant toxicity of melatonin, or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/melatonin-overdose\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin overdose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is unlikely. At the same time, it&rsquo;s best to take the amount that a healthcare provider suggests, usually one to five milligrams of melatonin per night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen drug interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/ibuprofen-oral-route\/precautions\/drg-20070602?p=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list from the Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is quite lengthy. Some examples include aspirin, SSRIs, lithium, and diuretics. Take note of any gastrointestinal or kidney problems before taking ibuprofen, too. &ldquo;I would be careful taking ibuprofen if you have underlying kidney disease or have issues with gastritis or ulcers in the stomach or small intestine,&rdquo; Dr. Dasgupta says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, he encourages people to remain upright after taking it. &ldquo;I would also recommend not lying down for 10 to 20 minutes after taking ibuprofen since this will help prevent gastrointestinal irritation and possible swallowing problems,&rdquo; he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen may also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-vs-tylenol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interact negatively with more drugs than Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (acetaminophen) does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does spacing them out make a difference when taking ibuprofen and melatonin together? How long after taking ibuprofen can someone then take melatonin? Dr. Green says people might want to consider the timing, but it&rsquo;s not necessarily the primary concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;There&rsquo;s no specific waiting period required between taking melatonin and ibuprofen; however, if you&rsquo;re concerned about potential interactions, spacing them out by a few hours might be worthwhile,&rdquo; Dr. Green says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, he recommends following the dosing instructions provided by a healthcare provider or as listed on the label.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dasgupta largely agrees. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no need to wait between them as they are used to address different concerns,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;Bottom line is to follow the recommended doses and talk to a doctor if you&rsquo;re unsure or have any concerns.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-role-of-ibuprofen-and-melatonin-in-treating-certain-medical-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The role of ibuprofen and melatonin in treating certain medical conditions&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As explained above, combining ibuprofen and melatonin supplements can be helpful in the treatment of some sleep disorders and pain conditions, as sleep disturbances and pain are closely linked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain can be a cause and an effect of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sleep-deprivation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insufficient sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as noted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6879497\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuropsychopharmacology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One way in which this happens is sleep deprivation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/sleep\/how-sleep-deprivation-can-cause-inflammation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can lead to inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can increase the risk of pain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/fibromyalgia-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fibromyalgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, persistent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/back-pain-on-the-right-side-under-the-ribs-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the pain from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/breast-cancer-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all linked to sleep issues, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/managing-insomnia-for-those-with-chronic-pain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Cleveland Clinic notes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&mdash;and they&#8217;re far from the only examples. Further, up to two-thirds of people with chronic pain conditions also have a sleep condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&rsquo;s where melatonin comes in. Increasing melatonin levels can also help with sleep and the pain (or inflammation) part. Melatonin possesses <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0889159121000386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3001216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve the course of inflammation-related illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and traumatic central nervous system (CNS) injuries, such as traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other pieces of research support the helpfulness of melatonin in these situations. For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4119581\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that melatonin can reduce pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking ibuprofen and melatonin shouldn&rsquo;t cause any significant damage to the bank. He says valerian root, magnesium, and chamomile can help with mental and physical relaxation and sleep. At the same time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/turmeric-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turmeric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ginger-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ginger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dasgupta believes there&rsquo;s insufficient evidence to support turmeric and ginger for pain relief.
