Second, Wiemann says some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5407112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows cayenne may have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce your risk for heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtalkrealfood.com\/info.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angela Ginn-Meadow, RD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certified diabetes educator and founder of Real Talk Real Food, cayenne pepper may promote better circulation and regulate blood flow, which can also lower the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/heart-disease-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk of heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wiemann says capsaicin is a thermogenic food, which means it may help speed up your metabolism: \u201cA faster metabolism would help promote weight loss because the body burns more calories both at rest and during exercise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to speeding up metabolism, Dr. Burkhart says capsaicin may also have a hunger-suppressing quality, increasing satiety and making you feel fuller with less food. This can help you lose or manage weight more easily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, the research still isn\u2019t clear on all of capsaicin\u2019s potential effects on weight, explains Dr. Burkhart, who also warns against relying on cayenne pepper supplements to lose weight in lieu of regular exercise, a healthy diet, and good quality sleep (i.e., the basics!).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-supports-a-healthier-gut\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Supports a healthier gut<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The science here is mixed, but it\u2019s important to mention that many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7730216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found a positive association between capsaicin and gut health. It may be able to increase the number of healthy bacteria in the gut, reduce the amount of acid in your stomach, and even play a role in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0014482722002208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevention or treatment of some inflammatory GI conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like inflammatory bowel disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Wiemann adds that one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9695709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did not find an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting this. Researchers noted that cayenne pepper had only a \u201cminimal\u201d effect on increasing the number of healthy gut bacteria and little impact in reducing inflammation in the intestines. That study was quite small, though, and more research is needed before the effects of capsaicin on gut health can be confirmed either way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although high doses of capsaicin can be harmful to your digestive system, the myth that spicy foods cause ulcers is just that: a myth. In fact, capsaicin may even be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchicagomedicine.org\/forefront\/health-and-wellness-articles\/spicy-foods-healthy-or-dangerous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good for preventing ulcers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially those caused by an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/h-pylori-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infection with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H. pylori<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-relieves-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Relieves pain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve come across capsaicin medicinally before, it was probably in the form of a topical product designed to relieve joint pain. Dr. Burkhart says that capsaicin shows potential for treating pain caused by several conditions, including arthritis and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/fibromyalgia-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fibromyalgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mechanism by which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3169333\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capsaicin relieves pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is complex and related to how our bodies receive pain signals and send them back to our brain; in simple terms, capsaicin can disrupt that messaging system in various ways, essentially short-circuiting the usual pain response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though capsaicin is widely available in OTC creams and gels, there are other ways to receive its pain-relieving benefits. For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a620056.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be applied to the skin to deliver a high amount of capsaicin to a targeted area. Wiemann also points to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5198041\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that showed that topical or injectable capsaicin was beneficial in treating nerve pain and pain from arthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-improves-liver-function\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Improves liver function<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can cayenne pepper detox your liver? Maybe! The truth is, says Dr. Burkhart, there\u2019s no direct supporting research on cayenne&#8217;s detoxification capabilities\u2014but the liver <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the body&#8217;s detoxification powerhouse. Cayenne increases blood flow throughout the body, which could potentially help the liver do its job more efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She says capsaicin has also been shown to help protect against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fatty-liver-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatty liver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, boosting the metabolism of fatty acids and allowing liver cells to digest them more quickly so they don\u2019t build up. However, Dr. Burkhart also cautions that capsaicin may be toxic to the liver in extremely high doses, so it\u2019s important for people to adhere to clinically studied dosages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-relieves-congestion-and-fights-illness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Relieves congestion and fights illness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding a dash of cayenne pepper to your favorite food or cup of tea <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/hawaii\/health-wellness\/healtharticle.6-natural-cold-remedies-try-this-winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you\u2019re sick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides temporary relief from congestion, clearing up a stuffy nose and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loosening mucus in your airways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to quiet a cough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some research shows cayenne could also help ward off some illnesses thanks to its potential antimicrobial and antiviral properties; an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4643145\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in vitro study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that capsaicin limited the activity of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/groupastrep\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group A streptococci<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the bacteria that causes strep throat) in cells, even in the case of some antibiotic-resistant strains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cayenne-pepper-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayenne pepper side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people can have cayenne pepper as a part of their daily diet, but it can cause mild side effects, and some people should limit or avoid their intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayenne can cause an upset stomach or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-heartburn-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; if you\u2019re sensitive to it, says Wiemann, you can reduce the amount you\u2019re consuming.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with gastritis or stomach ulcers may need to limit their consumption of cayenne. Still, Dr. Burkhart adds that some research shows cayenne pepper can actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) by stimulating digestion and improving digestive blood flow. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5143751\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, found that while initial exposure to red pepper sauce containing capsaicin caused an increase in heartburn in participants with GERD, repeated exposure to capsaicin decreased heartburn symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayenne has blood thinning effects, so it shouldn\u2019t be used for several weeks after surgery, says Dr. Burkhart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of topical capsaicin creams is generally safe, but it hasn&#8217;t been studied in children. Plus, Dr. Burkhart says it&#8217;s more likely that kids will spread the cream to other parts of their body, like their eyes, which may cause a painful, burning sensation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayenne doesn\u2019t have a hormonal effect, per se, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8548750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women going through menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are often advised to avoid it since it has a warming effect and can add to the frequency and intensity of hot flashes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"does-cayenne-pepper-interfere-with-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does cayenne pepper interfere with medications?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While cayenne is generally safe, Dr. Burkhart says there are some drug interactions people should be aware of before consuming a lot of cayenne pepper or using capsaicin to treat a health condition.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diabetes medications.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cayenne can lower your blood sugar too much if you take it with a diabetes medication, notes Dr. Burkhart. If you\u2019re looking for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28230360\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-pharmaceutical way to lower your blood sugar,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dietary capsaicin may be worth adding to your daily routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blood thinners.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People who take a blood thinner like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bleed more easily, and Dr. Burkhart says cayenne can further increase the risk of bleeding, as capsaicin may reduce blood clotting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other medications.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Certain medications for high blood pressure called ACE inhibitors, the antibiotic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ciprofloxacin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and an asthma medication called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/theophylline-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theophylline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may interact with cayenne. However, Dr. Burkhart says these interactions are rare and unlikely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Some supplements.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Any supplement known to lower blood sugar, like curcumin or ginger, or increase blood thinning, like fish oil, should be used carefully alongside cayenne, says Dr. Burkhart\u2014the cumulative effect of cayenne combined with these other supplements may cause problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are fewer possible interactions with topical capsaicin (for treating joint or arthritis pain, for example). However, it\u2019s still important to make sure your skin is in the right condition for topical application. \u201cIt\u2019s essential to be sure there are no cuts or open sores in the area where capsaicin cream is placed,\u201d says Dr. Burkart, \u201c[since] applying it to open skin would be incredibly painful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-add-cayenne-pepper-to-your-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to add cayenne pepper to your diet<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cayenne pepper is typically added to foods or beverages, while capsaicin is usually found in supplemental or topical form. To use cayenne pepper more in your diet, Ginn-Meadow suggests adding it to grilled vegetables, roasted meats and potatoes, stews and soups, eggs, and even sweet fruit like mango or melon (for an unexpected but tasty kick!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you don\u2019t need much to make an impact: \u201cRemember, capsaicin is the active ingredient in cayenne [and] gives it a spicy flavor profile\u2014a dash or two is filled with benefits,\u201d she notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-is-cayenne-pepper-healthy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Is cayenne pepper healthy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, cayenne pepper is safe to use medicinally. It may have potential health benefits for your heart, gastrointestinal system, and liver. Still, some people\u2014like those with hypertension, stomach ulcers, or taking blood thinners\u2014should be cautious and talk to their provider first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Burkhart says there\u2019s no widely recommended dosage.
