These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioids<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabinoids (CBD)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cetirizine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might worsen the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedative<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effects of these drugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cetirizine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will interfere with any allergy skin tests, so the medication should be stopped at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cliniciansbrief.com\/article\/atopic-dermatitis-diphenhydramine-vs-cetirizine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before any such test.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cetirizine-alternatives-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cetirizine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alternatives for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While cetirizine is safe for dogs, it\u2019s one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9030482\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">least effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antihistamines for relieving itch. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In humans, cetirizine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works by attaching to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamine receptors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on skin and skin nerve cells so that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2019t trigger swelling and itching. But, itching and swelling in a dog are not as dependent on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H1 receptors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as in humans. One <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo-controlled study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC548625\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian Veterinary Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that only about 18% of dogs get significant itch relief from oral <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetirizine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have produced better results than cetirizine in clinical studies, some of those are first-generation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are more likely to cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other central nervous system side effects.
