Claritin<\/span><\/a> (generic name loratadine) and <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span><\/a> (generic name cetirizine) are both over-the-counter (OTC) medicines commonly taken to treat allergy symptoms of hay fever, also known as seasonal allergies and hives (urticaria). They both temporarily relieve itchy and watery eyes, runny nose (allergic rhinitis), sneezing, and itching of the nose or throat. Antihistamines work by reducing the production of a natural substance in the body called histamine, which is responsible for causing allergic reactions when the body is exposed to allergens, such as pollen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Claritin and Zyrtec, along with <\/span>Allegra<\/span><\/a> (fexofenadine) and <\/span>Xyzal<\/span><\/a> (cetirizine), are classified as second-generation antihistamines. Can you take Claritin and Zyrtec together?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Although Claritin and Zyrtec are chemically different antihistamines, they are in the same drug class and share a similar blocking action on the histamine receptors. Because of these similar mechanisms of action, it is not recommended that they be taken together other than on direct medical advice from a healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
