Up to 42% of patients with psoriasis also have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000413.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psoriatic arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a type of arthritis that affects people with psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis often affects one side of the body, causing joint stiffness and pain. Some people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/psoriatic-arthritis-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psoriatic arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also have swelling of the eyes or tendons.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/stelara\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stelara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an injectable prescription drug containing the active ingredient ustekinumab. This study found:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By week 12, 67% of patients who took Stelara 45 milligram (mg) injections had at least a 75% improvement in psoriasis area and severity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By week 12, 67% of patients who took Stelara 90 mg had at least a 75% improvement in psoriasis area and severity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By week 12, 3% of patients who received a placebo (inactive medicine) had at least a 75% improvement in psoriasis area and severity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18486740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PHOENIX-2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clinical trial:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By week 12, 67% of patients who took Stelara 45 mg had at least a 75% improvement in psoriasis area and severity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By week 12, 76% of patients who took Stelara 90 mg had at least a 75% improvement in psoriasis area and severity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By week 12, 4% of patients who received a placebo (inactive medicine) had at least a 75% improvement in psoriasis area and severity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are multiple treatments for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and medical advice on an appropriate treatment for you. Your provider will take into account various individual factors like your medical conditions, medical history, and the medications you take.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-use-stelara-for-psoriasis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to use Stelara for psoriasis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you start treatment with Stelara, your healthcare provider will evaluate you for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/tuberculosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tuberculosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infection and closely monitor you for tuberculosis while being treated with Stelara.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, before using Stelara, your healthcare professional will provide proper training to you or your caregiver on the right way to prepare and inject the medication. These symptoms may include hives, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other serious side effects and warnings include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Infections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Because Stelara acts on the immune system, it can interfere with the body&rsquo;s ability to fight infection and increase the risk of infection, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-pneumonia-contagious\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and tuberculosis, among other serious infections (which may include bacterial, fungal, or viral infections such as gastroenteritis, or stomach flu). You should contact your healthcare provider immediately if you have symptoms of an infection, such as fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, sores on the body, or fatigue. Also, be alert to symptoms of urinary tract infections, such as urinating more frequently or burning when you urinate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Cancers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Stelara increases the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Some individuals who take Stelara and have risk factors for skin cancer have been diagnosed with certain types of skin cancers. Be alert to any skin changes or growths and notify your healthcare provider right away.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PRES): This is a rare condition that affects the brain. Several cases of PRES occurred in clinical studies. If found early and treated, most individuals will recover, but it can cause death if not treated. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have headaches, seizures, confusion, or any vision changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid live vaccines while taking Stelara. Some examples of live vaccines include the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/measles-booster\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measles, mumps, and rubella<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MMR) vaccine, varicella, rotavirus, and nasal flu vaccine. You also should not receive a BCG vaccine (a type of tuberculosis vaccine) while taking Stelara or one year before and after taking Stelara. Check with your healthcare provider before getting any vaccines while taking Stelara. Be aware that non-live vaccines may not elicit an immune response strong enough to prevent disease.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for more information about potential side effects, which can be found in the full prescribing information.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"who-should-not-take-stelara-for-psoriasis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take Stelara for psoriasis?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should not take Stelara if you are allergic to ustekinumab or any ingredient in the medication.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, you should not start taking Stelara if you have any type of active infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-stelara-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does Stelara cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the manufacturer&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelarainfo.com\/crohns-disease\/cost-support-and-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as of March 2022, the list price (price set by the manufacturer) of Stelara 90 mg is $25,497.12 every eight weeks.
