Additionally, people who have an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall addiction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problem may be tempted to take old pills if that&rsquo;s all they have left. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want you to know that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is likely less effective in terms of potency. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/pharmaceutical-quality-resources\/expiration-dates-questions-and-answers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that their regulations require a proposed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for medications to be approved. The pre-expiration period reflects when the drug is &ldquo;stable,&rdquo; meaning that the strength, quality, and purity are solid. Extensions of those <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration dates<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can and have happened if a manufacturer applies to do so, but they don&rsquo;t always.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, much testing and many factors are a part of the process, so the situation is complicated in determining an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shelf-life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of medications, including Adderall, is determined by rigorous testing performed by the manufacturer,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eahallpharmd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Elizabeth A. Hall, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor of clinical pharmacy and translational science, as well as the assistant vice chancellor of academic, faculty, and student affairs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. &ldquo;Many factors determine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shelf-life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so always refer to your prescription bottle for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ask your pharmacist any questions.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s also important to store the medicine properly (tips are below) so it stays good as long as possible. &ldquo;The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shelf life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is directly correlated to this,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drchristinamadisonthepublichealthpharmacist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Christina Madison, Pharm.D., FCCP, AAHIVP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder and CEO of The Public Health Pharmacist, PLLC. &ldquo;With that being said, typically most prescriptions expire one year after it is dispensed.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the common descriptor of &ldquo;expired&rdquo; is a little misleading. &ldquo;There is usually a margin of safety factored in here, so the medication may be stable for longer,&rdquo; adds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/maryann-amirshahi-bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Maryann Amirishani, Pharm.D., MD, MPH, Ph.D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., the co-medical director of the National Capital Poison Center and a professor of emergency medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But whether or not it&rsquo;s okay to take the medicine after the drug&rsquo;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is somewhat of a hot topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-to-adderall-when-it-expires\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens to Adderall when it expires?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&rsquo;s not a ton of research out there, but from what exists, the consensus is Adderall isn&rsquo;t as helpful once it expires.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hall points to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/1377417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2012 study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arch Intern Med<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which found expired samples of medication with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphetamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (one of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active ingredients<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Adderall) were at half-potency after being out-of-date for between 28 and 40 years. In other words, she says, if it was a 5 mg pill, the expired pill was measured to be fewer than 2.5 mg.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Given this study, it is reasonable to expect that the potency and efficacy of Adderall cannot be assured once it is expired,&rdquo; she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Madison points to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7040264\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2019 study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African Health Sciences<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that found most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OTC) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> likely maintain their potency for a few months to years after the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but says the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only guarantees full potency by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and if stored properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proper storage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is what it comes down to. Dr. Amirishani says the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rsquo;s testing through the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelf-Life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Extension Program (SLEP) found they could extend the half-life of 88% of medications for quite some time&mdash;and the conditions are probably much different in a patient&rsquo;s household.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Amirishani believes there&rsquo;s a big misunderstanding about where to store medication. &ldquo;One common mistake people make is to store their medications in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medicine cabinet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; Dr. Amirishani says. &ldquo;Heat and moisture from the shower can cause medications stored there to break down faster.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/expired-drugs-safe-take\/\"><b>Is <\/b><b>expired medicine<\/b><b> safe to take?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-expired-adderall-during-a-shortage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take expired Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during a shortage?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the recent shortage of Adderall, people may be tempted to take Adderall that&rsquo;s expired because they have no other way of getting it. Whether or not someone decides to take expired Adderall (excluding cases of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addiction treatment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is paramount) ultimately comes down to how cautious a person wants to be and what they expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;It&rsquo;s likely not harmful to take an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; Dr. Madison says. &ldquo;Unlike antibiotics such as doxycycline that become toxic if they expire, there is no issue other than decreased efficacy with taking this medication.&rdquo; This goes for Adderall, which has expired for all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">periods of time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Amirishani largely agrees patients shouldn&rsquo;t experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;Reports of adverse effects from taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are exceedingly rare,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;The big thing you worry about is a lack of potency. If a medication loses its potency, the medical problem you are taking it for may not be adequately treated, which can cause harm.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, other experts vote against taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;As a pediatric pharmacist, I would not recommend that patients <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take expired Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; Dr. Hall says. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agrees, urging people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/special-features\/dont-be-tempted-use-expired-medicines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to consume <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired medicines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and warning about the potency and safety risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, the good news is Adderall isn&rsquo;t the only option, particularly if taken <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adhd-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Dr. Hall, more than 30 medications are on the market today in the U.S. for this common condition. &ldquo;Patients and caregivers should speak with their pharmacist or other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine an alternative <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment option<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a patient does still take their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it may be unhelpful&mdash;and, more importantly, possibly unsafe. &ldquo;Taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not advised as it is beyond the date at which the medication manufacturer can guarantee full potency and safety of the medication,&rdquo; Dr. Hall says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-alternatives\/\"><b>Adderall alternatives: What can I take instead of Adderall?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tips-to-keep-your-adderall-prescription-good-until-its-expiration-date\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips to keep your Adderall prescription good until its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can keep an Adderall prescription good until the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expiration date<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with some storage tips. This ensures that Adderall has a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high potential<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to stay efficacious before expiration. In other words, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-effects-on-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effects of Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will work the way they&#8217;re supposed to and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adult-adhd-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/medguide.cfm?setid=aff45863-ffe1-4d4f-8acf-c7081512a6c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication guide for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall XR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends keeping the bottle:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a safe place, like a locked cabinet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the temperature is between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (aka <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">room temperature<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protected from light<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guide also says to consume Adderall XR capsule contents immediately&mdash;rather than store them&mdash;if they are sprinkled in applesauce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side note: A step before keeping Adderall good is spending less on it. Several pharmacies, such as CVS, have these, so they shouldn&rsquo;t be too hard to locate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;If a take-back site is unavailable in your area, you can dispose of the medication in your household garbage by mixing it inside a sealable plastic bag with old coffee grounds, kitty litter, or another unappealing substance,&rdquo; Dr. Hall adds. That way, someone experiencing Adderall abuse is less likely to take it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While flushing is an easier option that may come to mind, it&rsquo;s interestingly the opposite of what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advise. &ldquo;Never flush any medications unless your pharmacist or doctor has specifically instructed you to do so,&rdquo; Dr. Hall says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&rsquo;s because flushing it poses additional public health risks. &ldquo;Because of the environmental impact of medications getting in the water supply, it is not recommended that you flush Adderall,&rdquo; Dr. Amirishani adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disposing of it the right way is also crucial, given the high rates of addiction and the risk of it getting into the wrong hands, emphasizes Dr. Amirishani. &ldquo;Having extra <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expired medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the house can be a source of poisoning for young children or diversion or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adolescents or adults if they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-storage-home-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not properly stored<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pharmaceuticals have expiration dates.
