Food poisoning occurs when food is not properly stored, handled, or cooked, causing symptoms like stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. It can also make you feel weak and tired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it&rsquo;s probably not the first symptom that comes to mind when you think about food poisoning, fever is common, too. However, not all cases of food poisoning will cause a fever. Here&rsquo;s what to know about fever from food poisoning, including how long it lasts, treatment options, and when to see a healthcare professional for medical advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-food-poisoning-cause-a-fever\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can food poisoning cause a fever?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, food poisoning can cause a fever. Common symptoms of food poisoning can last from hours to days (and, less frequently, weeks) and can be mild to severe. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle and joint aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infectious bacteria, viruses, and parasites in food and drinks can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/blog\/2017\/08\/28\/are-you-sure-it-wasnt-food-poisoning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause food poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Foods can be exposed to these microbes when grown, harvested, processed, shipped, packaged, and prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/foods-linked-illness.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, raw meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, produce, grains (like raw flour), and sprouts are the most likely causes of food poisoning. You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/infections-and-poisoning\/food-poisoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> food poisoning when food is not cooked or stored correctly, left out too long, expired, or handled by someone who is ill or hasn&rsquo;t washed their hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The onset of symptoms, including a fever, can vary depending on the type of contaminant,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepadvisor.org\/dr-rajkumar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, internist and associate professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. Fever can occur within a few hours to several days after consuming contaminated food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&rsquo;s how long it takes symptoms to start for the most common types of food poisoning:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/diseases\/staphylococcal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Staphylococcus aureus<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A classic food-poisoning scenario caused by staph aureus is the summer picnic, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/199050-david-m-cutler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Cutler, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified family medicine physician at Providence Saint John&rsquo;s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Say a mayonnaise-containing potato salad is left outside in the sun for too long. Staph aureus may grow and cause food poisoning, he says. Symptoms can occur rapidly&mdash;30 minutes to eight hours after consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/communication\/salmonella-food.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Salmonella<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bacteria is found in many foods, including chicken, eggs, meat, sprouts, nut butter, and fresh produce. Salmonella poisoning can also occur from exposure to pets at farms or petting zoos. Symptoms appear six hours to six days after exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vibrio\/food.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Vibrio<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Found in raw or undercooked shellfish like oysters, symptoms begin within 24 hours of exposure to this bacteria.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/diseases\/clostridium-perfringens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Clostridium perfringens<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The bacteria C. perfringens is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It typically occurs when large batches of food containing poultry or meat are cooked and stored at improper temperatures. Symptoms appear within six to 24 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/campylobacter\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Campylobacter:<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Caused by consuming raw or undercooked poultry, this bacteria is another common cause of food poisoning. Symptoms occur <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/campylobacter\/symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two to five days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after ingestion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/norovirus\/downloads\/keyfacts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Norovirus:<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A highly contagious virus, norovirus often causes gastroenteritis, or the stomach bug common in daycares, nursing homes, and cruise ships. Though it&rsquo;s not technically food poisoning, it is usually categorized as such because it can spread through contaminated foods or liquids. Symptoms begin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/norovirus\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 to 48 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/e-coli\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20372058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>E. coli<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This bacteria resides in the intestines, but sometimes, certain strains (like E. coli O157:H7) can contaminate water and food, resulting in food poisoning. The onset of symptoms is typically within three to four days of exposure but can occur anywhere between one to seven days of ingestion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/toxoplasmosis\/gen_info\/faqs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Toxoplasma gondii<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This parasite often causes food poisoning from undercooked meat (such as pork, venison, and lamb) and shellfish (like clams, mussels, and oysters). It can also be caused by exposure to cat feces when cleaning the litter box. Symptoms start about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/diseases\/toxoplasmosis\/toxo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one to three weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/foodborne-pathogens\/listeria-listeriosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Listeria monocytogenes<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Listeria is a bacteria that can inhabit raw, unpasteurized milk and dairy products like soft cheeses, raw fruits and vegetables, and raw or unprocessed sausages, deli meats, fish, and hot dogs. Symptoms usually occur within<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/listeria\/symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-normal-to-have-a-fever-with-food-poisoning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it normal to have a fever with food poisoning?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Fever is pretty common if you have food poisoning, especially in response to bacterial and viral infections,&rdquo; says Dr. Dasgupta. However, not everyone will develop a fever from food poisoning, and individuals with mild symptoms usually get better without treatment, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research is lacking on the frequency of fever with food poisoning. Dr. Cutler says that most cases of food poisoning are mild and, as a result, unreported. He says that when a fever does occur with food poisoning, it&rsquo;s typically low-grade (no higher than 100 to 101 degrees). A high fever from food poisoning is anything over 102 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-a-fever-last-with-food-poisoning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does a fever last with food poisoning?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;How long a fever from food poisoning lasts can be different for everyone,&rdquo; says Dr. Dasgupta. Usually, it&#8217;s a day or two, but it depends on how sick you are, your overall health, and whether you seek medical help when needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&rsquo;s how long symptoms, including fever, typically take to go away by organism:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Staphylococcus aureus:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 24 hours or less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Salmonella: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four to seven days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vibrio bacteria: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to three days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clostridium perfringens:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 24 hours or less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Campylobacter:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Up to one week<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Norovirus:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One to three days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>E. coli: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to one week<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Toxoplasma gondii: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two to four weeks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Listeria: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One to three days<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-a-fever-from-food-poisoning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat a fever from food poisoning<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a fever from food poisoning, focus on staying hydrated with water, getting rest, and eating simple, easy-to-digest foods (like crackers and bananas),&rdquo; says Dr. Dasgupta. Over-the-counter (OTC) fever reducers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen sodium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can help. However, you should avoid using antidiarrheal medicine like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/imodium-a-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imodium A-D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/loperamide-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loperamide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pepto-bismol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pepto Bismol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bismuth-subsalicylate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bismuth subsalicylate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with a fever or bloody diarrhea unless advised to do so by a healthcare provider, says Dr. Dasgupta.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-your-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe dehydration is a serious risk when you have food poisoning, says Dr. Cutler.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rehydration with water, broths, and electrolyte-containing fluids is essential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;It&rsquo;s time to see your doctor for food poisoning with a fever if you experience severe symptoms,&rdquo; advises Dr. Dasgupta such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constant vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloody diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea lasting longer than three days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High fever (greater than 102 degrees)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of dehydration (extreme thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness, and lightheadedness)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dasgupta says high-risk patients, including those with kidney disease or weakened immune systems, young children, pregnant women, older adults, or those who have recently traveled to areas prone to foodborne illnesses should also seek prompt medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, 1 in 6 Americans gets a foodborne illness from eating contaminated food or drinks.
