L-theanine is known for its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2213453021001324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calming properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that help to counteract some of the less pleasant side effects of caffeine, like jitteriness and anxiety, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodybuildingreviews.com\/profile\/jeanette-giacinto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeanette Giacinto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian based in Long Beach, NY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L-theanine, particularly when combined with magnesium, has also been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2022.874254\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to directly influence GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptors in the brain. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/22857-gamma-aminobutyric-acid-gaba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GABA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that has a calming effect on the central nervous system. An older <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18681988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared the effects of 50 mg of caffeine with or without 100 mg of L-theanine in healthy volunteers while performing cognitively demanding tasks. The L-theanine\/caffeine group experienced increased speed and accuracy of performance on attention-switching tasks and reduced distraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"improved-cognition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved cognition<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cognitive-enhancing effects show promise for individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/adhd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/spilling-beans-how-much-caffeine-too-much\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, excess caffeine intake can cause:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jitters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach (dyspepsia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unhappiness (dysphoria)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While no significant adverse side effects are associated with L-theanine, it&#8217;s always recommended to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are taking prescription or over-the-counter medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-l-theanine-with-coffee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take L-theanine with coffee<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If coffee is your preferred caffeinated beverage, Giacinto recommends taking L-theanine with caffeine about 30 minutes before you need to complete a task or start your workday. &ldquo;Keep in mind that although L-theanine reduces the disruption that caffeine has on sleep, it&rsquo;s still important to limit caffeine late in the day in order to not disrupt sleep patterns,&rdquo; she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best dose of L-theanine and coffee can vary by individual tolerance, but a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18681988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1:2 ratio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of caffeine to L-theanine is recommended, says Sklaver. The average cup of coffee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/caffeine\/art-20049372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just under 100 mg of caffeine, so you&rsquo;d add a 200 mg dose of L-theanine. Sklaver recommends taking the L-theanine at the same time as your coffee since they work synergistically together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giacinto says that because L-theanine is an amino acid, it may be best <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerlab.com\/answers\/must-i-take-amino-acid-supplements-on-an-empty-stomach\/how-to-take-amino-acid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">absorbed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on an empty stomach, especially without protein-containing foods. But if you experience stomach upset or nausea, it&rsquo;s okay to take it with food, such as a small meal or snack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L-theanine is believed to be safe for daily use in healthy adults but always check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting a new supplement. If you&rsquo;re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/nursing-and-health-professions\/theanine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or breastfeeding, you should avoid L-theanine supplementation.
