Conditions caused by HPV include genital warts and several types of cancer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, who should get the HPV vaccine, and what is the Gardasil 9 dosing schedule? The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/hpv\/hcp\/recommendations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that most people ages 15&ndash;45 follow a three-dose schedule, while most people ages 9&ndash;14 follow a two-dose schedule. The CDC and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/immunization-vaccines-and-biologicals\/diseases\/human-papillomavirus-vaccines-(HPV)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agree that the first dose may be given as young as age 9.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-is-the-hpv-vaccine-for\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is the HPV vaccine for?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is spread through sexual activity. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States, according to the CDC. And while most cases of HPV resolve on their own, some HPV types can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/infectious-agents\/hpv-and-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead to serious health issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anal cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervical cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neck cancers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulvar cancers&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penile cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These complications can occur regardless of gender. &ldquo;This vaccine is routine and recommended for everyone, all genders, ages 9&ndash;26,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drchristinamadisonthepublichealthpharmacist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christina M. Madison, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepublichealthpharmacist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Public Health Pharmacist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardasil 9 is also recommended for many adults ages 27&ndash;45. &ldquo;If a person has had no prior sexual partners or a limited number of prior sexual partners, their risk of HPV exposure may be very low,&rdquo; explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/author\/blair-gingerich-pharmd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blair Gingerich, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ambulatory care pharmacist in northern Indiana. &ldquo;If a person expects to have new sexual partners, they should consider receiving the vaccine.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommendation for an HPV vaccination for adolescents as young as 9 years old may take some people by surprise. However, the incidence of STIs among adolescents is rising. The 15&ndash;24 age bracket accounts for about 50% of new STI diagnoses, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5856484\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research review published in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"recommended-hpv-vaccination-schedule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommended HPV vaccination schedule<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/vaccines\/gardasil-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has approved Gardasil-9 for males and females ages 9&ndash;45. If you have a fear of needles or have experienced dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting during or after a previous injection, alert your pharmacist or provider at your HPV vaccine appointment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-i-do-if-i-miss-an-hpv-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should I do if I miss an HPV vaccine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do your best to stick to your healthcare provider&rsquo;s recommended Gardasil 9 schedule&mdash;but if you miss a dose, just make an appointment for the next dose as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;No need to restart the series; just take the vaccine dose as if you were &lsquo;on time&rsquo; for your recommended vaccine,&rdquo; Madison said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stretching the recommended time frame between doses does not negate the benefits of the dose(s) you received, but it does mean you are not fully immunized against the virus.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"do-schools-and-colleges-require-the-hpv-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do schools and colleges require the HPV vaccine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many schools and colleges in the United States require proof of vaccination from incoming students before the academic year begins. Proof of vaccination typically involves a written statement from a healthcare provider. But HPV vaccine requirements are state-dependent.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State vaccine requirements may change at any time. Currently, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.immunize.org\/official-guidance\/state-policies\/vaccine-requirements\/hpv-secondary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV vaccination is required for high school students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">District of Columbia (DC)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaii<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhode Island<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a student cannot receive the HPV vaccine for a medical or religious reason, they can be exempt from this requirement. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.ri.gov\/immunization\/about\/hpv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhode Island<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a school nurse may help individuals obtain religious exemption forms, but doctors must provide medical exemptions. Exemption criteria may vary by state, so check with your state health department for details.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-insurance-cover-gardasil-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does insurance cover Gardasil 9?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardasil9.com\/patient-a\/how-to-get-gardasil-9\/insurance-coverage\/#:~:text=GARDASIL%209%20is%20covered%20by,CPTb%20code%20is%3A%2090651.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most private insurance plans do cover Gardasil 9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the drug&rsquo;s manufacturer, Merck &amp; Co. Inc. However, the specifics of coverage&mdash;like whether you pay part or none of the cost&mdash;depend on the insurer and the conditions of your insurance plan.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The federal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/hpv\/hcp\/payment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines for Children (VFC) program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides vaccines such as Gardasil at no cost to children who are uninsured, underinsured, or who receive Medicaid.
