It works by blocking the effects of TNF, a chemical messenger that causes inflammation (swelling) in the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Enbrel generic name is etanercept. Because Enbrel is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/center-biologics-evaluation-and-research-cber\/what-are-biologics-questions-and-answers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biologic drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a less expensive version of this drug would be referred to as an Enbrel biosimilar rather than an Enbrel generic (more on this below).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Enbrel biosimilars have been approved by the FDA, but they are not yet available:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Erelzi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (etanercept-szzs) was approved in August 2016 and is expected to be available in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novartis.com\/news\/media-releases\/us-supreme-court-denies-sandoz-petition-review-biosimilar-erelzi-etanercept-szzs-case\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2029<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eticovo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (etanercept-ykro) was approved in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforbiosimilars.com\/view\/fda-approves-samsung-bioepis-etanercept-biosimilar-eticovo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is expected to be available in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforbiosimilars.com\/view\/nj-court-decision-means-3-decades-of-product-exclusivity-for-enbrel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2029<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-differences-between-brand-name-and-generic-enbrel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the differences between brand-name and generic Enbrel?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic medications are less expensive versions of FDA-approved prescription or OTC drugs. However, biologic drugs like Enbrel are different. Biologic drugs come from living sources like humans or animals. As such, they are complex and hard to exactly duplicate. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org\/patientsandcaregivers\/what-is-ibd\/medication\/biosimilars\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biosimilar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a highly similar version of an FDA-approved biologic medication. So rather than an Enbrel generic, these versions are known as Enbrel biosimilars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biosimilars contain the same active ingredient, work the same way, and are administered the same way (e.g., injection) as the original product, known as the reference product. Because Enbrel affects the immune system, there is an increased risk of serious infections.
