The type of exercise you do matters. You\u2019ll want to stick to gentle movements because intense exercise, like sprinting or vigorous cycling, can make symptoms of acid reflux worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-exercise-help-acid-reflux\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can exercise help acid reflux?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExercise can reduce the risk of many medical conditions, including acid reflux,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supriya Rao, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a quadruple board-certified physician in internal medicine, gastroenterology, obesity medicine, and lifestyle medicine at Northeast Endoscopy Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. Walking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking is likely the best (and most underrated) exercise form. It creates a gentle massaging action felt by internal organs like the intestines and stomach, which can help calm the digestive tract. \u201cDeep breathing can also improve the function of the lower esophageal sphincter,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-light-jogging\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Light jogging<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light jogging can also be beneficial for people living with acid reflux. Swimming<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming is a great low-impact choice, says Dr. Rao. It can strengthen your diaphragm, reducing your risk of acid reflux. Additionally, weightlifting exercises that involve bending or lying flat can allow acid to flow back into the esophagus more easily, says Dr. Dibba.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-gymnastics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Gymnastics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it\u2019s full of high-impact flips, twists, and tumbles, gymnastics can be particularly challenging for individuals with acid reflux, potentially triggering a flare-up. If you do eat, avoid foods that trigger acid reflux, such as chocolate, citrus juices, caffeinated drinks, and spicy or fatty foods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stick with low-impact activities.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Low-intensity and low-impact exercises are less likely to trigger heartburn.
