Tyrosine has several vital functions in your body. It helps produce the neurotransmitters dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine; contributes to melanin production, the pigment that gives color to skin and hair; and supports your adrenal, pituitary, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.endocrine.org\/patient-engagement\/endocrine-library\/hormones-and-endocrine-function\/thyroid-and-parathyroid-hormones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thyroid glands<\/a> in hormone production. On top of all that, L-tyrosine has gained attention for its potential as a weight-loss aid. &ldquo;Because L-tyrosine is used to make thyroid hormones, it&rsquo;s believed that supplementation of this amino acid can affect metabolism and help with weight loss,&rdquo; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodybuildingreviews.com\/profile\/jeanette-giacinto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeanette Giacinto<\/a>, a registered dietitian based in Long Beach, New York. Most supplement manufacturers recommend 500 to 1500 mg daily, but specific dosing can vary.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-l-tyrosine-should-you-take-for-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much L-tyrosine should you take for weight loss?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have found that L-tyrosine doses of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26424423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100-200 milligrams per kilogram of body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> weight are safe for up to three months. However, most manufacturers recommend a total dosage of 500 mg to 1,500 mg daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L-tyrosine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfcfr\/CFRSearch.cfm?fr=172.320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generally recognized as safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but it&rsquo;s important to note&mdash;there is no standard recommended dosage of L-tyrosine for weight loss. It differs by weight, age, and individual tolerance, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drchristinarahm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christina Rahm, Ph.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nutraceutical researcher based in Tennessee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L-tyrosine can start working within 30 minutes to a few hours after ingestion, but individual responses may vary. For example, if your total daily dose is 1,500 mg, you&rsquo;d take one 500 mg dose 30 minutes before eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking L-tyrosine on an empty stomach may also allow for better absorption, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/umo-callins-ms-rdn-cssd-cpt-206a0226\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umo Callins, RD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wellrootedhn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well Rooted Health and Nutrition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Oklahoma City. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining L-tyrosine with vitamin B6, B9 (folate), and copper may help the body convert the amino acid into important neurotransmitters.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check in with a pharmacist or healthcare provider before combining L-tyrosine with other supplements. &ldquo;Stacking L-tyrosine with other supplements should be done under the guidance of a healthcare professional,&rdquo; says Rahm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"benefits-of-l-tyrosine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of L-tyrosine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proponents of L-tyrosine say it can help you lose a few pounds, enhance cognitive function, make you feel more alert, and more. While more research on L-tyrosine&#8217;s health benefits is needed, some studies back up these claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-supports-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Supports weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16652130\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people taking a supplement containing L-tyrosine, capsaicin, catechins, and caffeine lost more weight than those taking a placebo. It&rsquo;s thought that L-tyrosine can speed up your metabolism, says Giacinto. However, more evidence is needed to confirm its efficacy as a weight-loss supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-enhances-mental-performance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Enhances mental performance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26424423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that L-tyrosine supplementation can boost mental performance&mdash;helping to reduce &ldquo;brain fog&rdquo; in high-stress conditions and prevent cognitive decline. During periods of high stress, depletion of neurotransmitters (such as dopamine and or norepinephrine) often occurs, explains Callins. L-tyrosine increases these neurotransmitters, helping to counteract the mental effects of stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;L-tyrosine, as a precursor to neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, is implicated in supporting mental health by potentially reducing stress and contributing to mood regulation,&rdquo; says Rahm. However, more research is needed to support its use for this purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-increases-energy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Increases energy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;L-tyrosine is associated with increased energy levels by supporting the synthesis of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine,&rdquo; says Rahm. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/22581-dopamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dopamine <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps regulate energy levels (too little can cause fatigue), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.endocrine.org\/patient-engagement\/endocrine-library\/hormones-and-endocrine-function\/adrenal-hormones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">norepinephrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps break down fat and convert sugar to energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While studies on L-tyrosine supplementation as a standalone energy booster are limited, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6880365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supports that L-tyrosine, in combination with caffeine and other amino acids, can improve mental performance and exercise tolerance in athletes. &ldquo;Many energy-promoting drinks and powders contain this combination as part of their formulation,&rdquo; says Callins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-may-help-with-phenylketonuria-pku\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. May help with phenylketonuria (PKU)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/condition\/phenylketonuria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phenylketonuria (PKU) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an extremely rare inherited disorder that increases blood levels of phenylalanine, an amino acid found in protein-containing foods like meat, eggs, dairy products, and nuts. Your body uses phenylalanine to produce L-tyrosine. Supports thyroid health and a healthy metabolism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;L-tyrosine is vital for supporting thyroid health by playing a key role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones&mdash;thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)&mdash;crucial for regulating metabolism and promoting healthy metabolic function,&rdquo; says Rahm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18274206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that L-tyrosine supplementation improved thyroid function among individuals living in Antarctica during the winter. This suggests that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L-tyrosine may be beneficial in situations involving underproduction or disrupted production of thyroid hormones, says Callins.
