Symptoms commonly start in the big toes, but gout attacks can also affect the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, and fingers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While stress can trigger gout flare-ups, it does not directly cause gout. Luckily, stress-reduction techniques can help keep these types of flares at bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-stress-cause-gout\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does stress cause gout?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gout typically develops in patients with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperuricemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or chronically elevated uric acid levels in the blood. \u201cStress can impact your hormonal balances and metabolism, potentially affecting how uric acid is processed in your body,\u201d says\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a quadruple board-certified physician specializing in internal medicine based in California. Additionally, stress-related behaviors, like a poor diet and increased alcohol intake, can elevate uric acid levels and trigger gout flare-ups, adds Dr. Dasgupta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uric acid forms as a byproduct when the body breaks down the endogenous chemicals called purines, which are also found in red meat, alcohol, high fructose corn syrup, and shellfish like shrimp, scallops, mussels, and lobster. Normally, uric acid is dissolved in the blood, traveling through the kidneys before being eliminated in the urine. But when levels get too high, and the kidneys can&#8217;t remove them, needle-like uric acid crystals build up in tissues, potentially leading to gout or kidney stones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four stages of gout:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hyperuricemia,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which can be asymptomatic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gout flares,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or acute attacks of intense pain and swelling in the joints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interval or intercritical gout,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the time between gout flares when no symptoms are present<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tophi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">late-state gout, a buildup of crystals in the skin or other areas of the body that can lead to irreversible damage to the joints, kidneys, and other internal organs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are at a higher risk of developing the condition, as are women after menopause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/raj-dasgupta-md-facp-fccp-faasm-a9839093\/\">Dr. Dasgupt<\/a>a, several health conditions and lifestyle factors can put you at increased risk of gout, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic kidney disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming large quantities of meat or seafood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking medications that affect blood levels of urate, such as immunosuppressants or diuretics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other forms of arthritis, gout causes pain and inflammation in the joints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gout-triggers\/\"><b>Understanding risk factors for gout<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-science-behind-stress-and-uric-acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The science behind stress and uric acid<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress doesn&#8217;t directly cause gout, but it might increase oxidative stress in the body, and uric acid is a byproduct of these reactions, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthmeetswellness.com\/provider\/elizabeth-sharp-edens-md-dabom-ifmcp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Sharp, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified internal medicine physician and founder of Health Meets Wellness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHigher levels of uric acid can be correlated with higher levels of oxidative stress if uric acid is not cleared through the kidneys and intestines,\u201d Dr. Sharp says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A growing body of evidence has shown that oxidative stress can contribute to increased uric acid levels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8949471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research review and meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> point to a link between increased uric acid levels and oxidative stress from cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus or metabolic syndrome. Even so, more data is needed to establish a direct <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause-and-effect relationship, Dr. Sharp says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The connection between stress and uric acid also lies in the body&#8217;s stress response. When your body is under physical or emotional stress, it releases cortisol, a hormone that increases the production of uric acid. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9221204\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found a strong correlation between high levels of cortisol from stress and anxiety and high levels of uric acid. The DASH diet is high in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat dairy, and low in saturated fats and sugary foods and drinks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid purine-rich foods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including alcohol, shellfish, red meat, organ meat, and sugar-sweetened beverages like soda.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay hydrated.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While you can\u2019t \u201cflush out\u201d gout, Dr. Sharp says that adequate fluid intake can help lower uric acid levels; on the flip side, dehydration can trigger a flare. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try drinking 16 eight-ounce servings of water daily to keep gout pain at bay.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Get regular exercise <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you\u2019re symptom-free to prevent future flares<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, during a gout flare\u2014when the inflammatory process is at its worst\u2014you should rest, advises Dr. Dasgupta. \u201cConsider elevating your legs if the pain is affecting your lower body,\u201d he recommends.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By effectively managing stress and following appropriate treatment strategies, you can reduce the frequency and severity of gout flare-ups.
