If you&rsquo;ve noticed it in grocery and drug store aisles recently, it may be because this dietary antioxidant is becoming more popular.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;There&rsquo;s good reason for the growing interest,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jacob-teitelbaum-m-d-05582214\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob Teitelbaum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an integrative medicine physician in Hawaii and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fatigued-Fantastic-Fourth-Clinically-Overcome\/dp\/0593421507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Fatigued to Fantastic<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quercetin is purported to have many health benefits. For example, it may prevent cardiovascular disease, has anti-inflammatory effects, and may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virologyj.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12985-024-02299-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fend off SARS-CoV-2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the virus that causes COVID-19. It&rsquo;s generally considered safe, but people with certain health conditions should avoid taking it as a supplement. Here&rsquo;s what you need to know about this flavonoid and its safety profile.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-quercetin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take quercetin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quercetin is safe for most people to consume in food. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s also been shown to be safe as a supplement at concentrations when taken at doses lower than 1000 mg,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drwilliamli.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Li, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, physician and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat to Beat Disease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&rsquo;s generally recognized as safe by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9880293\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, experts recommend that the following groups avoid taking quercetin supplements:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with kidney disease: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/supplement\/quercetin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High doses of quercetin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could damage your kidneys. If your kidneys are already compromised, it could be especially risky.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People with caffeine sensitivities:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4082882\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that taking quercetin may inhibit the metabolism of caffeine. Taking the supplement might increase the blood levels of caffeine, notes Dr. Li.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Children and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no human data proving this supplement&rsquo;s safety for expectant mothers, a developing fetus, a new baby, or children. Additionally, pregnancy stresses the kidneys. In fact, some experts suggest that quercetin could be the cause of the headache you get after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefriday.com\/segments\/red-wine-headache-quercetin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drinking too much red wine.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The theory is that the quercetin in the skin of red grapes might create a type of toxic byproduct, and you get a headache as a result.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Upset stomach:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If your stomach feels a little upset after taking quercetin, don&rsquo;t be too surprised. First, be sure to take a daily dosage of 1 gram (1,000 mg) or less. No clinical trials have reported serious adverse events from daily doses of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/COVID19-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 1000 mg of quercetin for up to 12 weeks.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss all supplements and medications you are taking with a healthcare professional or pharmacist before starting quercetin. The supplement is most effective when taken with meals. Certain foods can aid its absorption, and it prevents upset stomach. It also helps with consistency.
