According to the CDC, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/shingles\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 3 Americans will get Shingles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their lifetime. This rash-causing virus is certainly prevalent, but it\u2019s also avoidable thanks to immunizations like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/shingrix\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Millions of people have already received at least one dose of this shingles vaccine\u2014but does it actually work?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, yes. Shingrix has been over 90% effective in preventing shingles for older adults. Here\u2019s all the information you need about how Shingrix works and what makes it so effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-shingrix-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Shingrix work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingles (herpes zoster) comes from the varicella-zoster virus, the same one that causes chickenpox. Even after the chickenpox illness resolves, this virus lies dormant in the nervous system. Occasionally, it can reactivate, causing a painful rash, also known as shingles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix contains dead pieces of this virus, called antigens, and adjuvant proteins, which allow the immune system to bolster its defenses against it. \u201cBy injecting adjuvants and [antigens], the body can remember the infection and thus B and T cells can make a response to the infection,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drbengibson.com\/lander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben Gibson, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pharmacist, speaker, and medical writer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, once the immune system is familiar with the virus, it will know how to fight it. Shingrix is administered in two doses, each comprising one vial of antigen, reconstituted with one vial of adjuvant suspension.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"shingrix-efficacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix efficacy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends Shingrix for everyone 50 years and older because it\u2019s shown excellent efficacy in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6590925\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that demonstrated a high percentage of efficacy among the following age groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ages 50\u201359: 96.6%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ages 60\u201369: 97.4%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ages 70\u201379: 90.0%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ages 80 and older: 89.1%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For immunocompromised adults, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocatehealth.com\/health-services\/primary-care\/preventive-care\/vaccinations\/shingles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those numbers drop to 68%\u201391% efficacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on their underlying condition. Shingrix also showed 91.2% vaccine efficacy in preventing postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) for adults over 50, and 88.8% efficacy for adults over 70.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it works, but the CDC says patients report that it might also cause some side effects. In fact, around 1 out of 10 patients report injection site pain, redness, and swelling. And 1 out of 10 also report adverse events like muscle aches, fatigue, headaches, shivering, fever, and gastrointestinal illness. That said, these effects are typically only temporary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/safety-availability-biologics\/fda-requires-warning-about-guillain-barre-syndrome-gbs-be-included-prescribing-information-shingrix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a warning in the prescribing information that Shingrix can cause<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/guillain-barre-syndrome-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a serious autoimmune disorder where the body attacks its own peripheral nerves. Fortunately, it\u2019s pretty rare. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8561433\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found only three excess cases of Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome per million doses of Shingrix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/shingrix-vaccine-shingles\/\"><b>Getting the Shingrix vaccine\u2014is it worth it?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"shingrix-dosage-schedule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix dosage schedule<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like some other vaccines,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/shingrix-vaccine-shingles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix comes in two doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe standard recommendation to administer the second dose of Shingrix is two to six months after the first dose. This interval is crucial to build a strong and effective immune response,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somamandalmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified internist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summithealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summit Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/shingles\/hcp\/shingrix\/faqs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> getting both doses, even if you\u2019ve had Zostavax, a herpes zoster vaccine that\u2019s no longer in use, since Shingrix provides stronger protection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within that two-to-six-month window, the exact timing depends on the patient\u2019s overall health. \u201cIf the patient is experiencing any severe illness or acute infection, it may be advisable to delay the second dose until the patient has recovered. If a patient had a severe allergic reaction to the first dose of Shingrix, the second dose should not be given. If a patient has a weakened immune system, the timing of the second dose may need to be adjusted,\u201d Dr. Mandal said. Most people can wait up to six months, although immunocompromised people may want to get their next dose<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/shingles\/hcp\/shingrix\/administering-vaccine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within one to two months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If the second dose is delayed longer than six months, it can still be given without repeating the first dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC says the vaccine\u2019s immunity lasts for at least seven years, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36299530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain studies suggest<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it might last up to ten. After that, your protection may be less robust, although it\u2019s best to consult your healthcare provider to know for sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-effective-is-one-dose-of-shingrix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How effective is one dose of Shingrix?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/who-didnt-get-a-second-shingrix-shot-implications-for-multidose-covid-19-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KFF data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2018, 74% of Medicare Part D beneficiaries had received their second dose of Shingrix within six months of getting their first dose. So what about the 26% who just got the first one? Odds are, it\u2019ll still reduce the risk of shingles and postherpetic neuralgia, but not quite as much. \u201cThe first dose helps the immune system start building protection against the shingles virus,\u201d Dr. Mandal said. \u201cWhile the second dose boosts that production.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are limited studies on the efficacy of a single dose, but<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthmdc.com\/documents\/Efficacy%20After%20One%20Dose%20i.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have concluded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that one dose had only 69.5% vaccine effectiveness in adults over 70. The authors noted, however, that the time frame for this study was fairly short, since most of the subjects proceeded to get their second dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-don-t-get-a-second-shingrix-shot\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you don&#8217;t get a second Shingrix shot?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether about the potential side effects of Shingrix or because life just got hectic, some people miss their second dose. If it\u2019s been longer than six months since your first dose, don\u2019t panic. You don\u2019t need to start over. Instead, just get the second one as soon as you can. \u201cBut after a year, said Dr. Gibson, \u201ca single dose doesn\u2019t have as much benefit, as displayed by a study where patients waited two, six, and twelve months before getting their second dose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince Shingrix is a two-dose vaccine, both doses are necessary to provide the highest level of protection against shingles.
