Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common infection of the lungs and breathing passages that causes cold-like symptoms\u2014but it can also be quite serious.<\/span> According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a>, it causes 60,000\u2013160,000 hospitalizations and 6,000\u201310,000 deaths among people ages 65 and older each year. Arexvy, an <\/span>RSV vaccine<\/span><\/a>, can reduce the risk of developing RSV-related lower respiratory tract disease by 94.1%, <\/span>according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Manufactured by GSK, average retail price of Arexvy is $630.16 for a dose of the vaccine. But the price varies and ultimately depends on factors such as your insurance drug coverage and where you go to get your vaccine. Medicare Part D often covers Arexvy for older adults, but it varies between plans and patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Does Medicare cover Arexvy?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In most cases, yes. \u201cNot everyone realizes their Part D or Medicare Advantage plan, if it has Part D coverage, has to pay for these vaccines,\u201d says <\/span>Tanya Feke, MD<\/span><\/a>, a health policy analyst for <\/span>medicareresources.org<\/span><\/a>. The <\/span>Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services<\/span><\/a> says that Part D beneficiaries<\/span> usually pay nothing out of pocket for most vaccines, including the RSV shot. GSK says essentially the same thing\u2014that <\/span>Arexvy is covered for nearly all adults over 60 years of age<\/span><\/a>, and those patients will pay $0 out of pocket thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act.<\/span><\/p>\n

This only applies to people with Medicare Part D plans. Medicare Part A doesn\u2019t cover drugs, and even though Part B covers some vaccines, Arexvy isn\u2019t one of them. Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) often include drug coverage, but you\u2019ll want to check with your specific plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Factors influencing Medicare coverage of Arexvy\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Medicare Part D<\/span><\/a> typically covers all <\/span>vaccines that the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends<\/span><\/a>. That includes vaccines for RSV, shingles, hepatitis, and others. \u201cWhen the <\/span>Inflation Reduction Act<\/span><\/a> passed in 2022, it made vaccines covered by Part D free to Medicare beneficiaries just like vaccines that are covered by Medicare Part B. That means you do not have to pay toward your deductible, the cost of the vaccine, or for any dispensing or administrative fees,\u201d Dr. Feke says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But some plans might not include Arexvy on their formularies. Fortunately, it should still be covered. \u201cIf the vaccine is not on your plan\u2019s formulary, you may have to pay upfront for the vaccine and then get your plan to reimburse you after the fact,\u201d Dr. Feke says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Certain plans might require prior authorization\u2014additional paperwork from the beneficiary\u2019s healthcare provider about the medication\u2019s necessity\u2014but this isn\u2019t always the case. \u201cTypically, these requirements are in place to ensure that the prescribed medication is used appropriately and as cost-effectively as possible,\u201d according to <\/span>Les Perlson<\/span><\/a>, an insurance agent at <\/span>National Plan Administrators<\/span><\/a>. \u201cFor Arexvy, if prior authorization is needed, it would likely involve confirming the medical necessity of the vaccine for the patient and ensuring that it aligns with the plan’s coverage criteria.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Arexvy website has an<\/span> insurance checker tool<\/span><\/a> that can help patients see whether their plans cover the vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n

How much does Arexvy cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n

On average, Arexvy costs $630 without any help from insurance, patient assistance programs, or other discounts. Like other prescription drugs, however, that price isn\u2019t set in stone. It can vary based on things like inflation, manufacturer policies, and even the pharmacy location. In fact, <\/span>prices can fluctuate greatly between pharmacies<\/span><\/a>, even ones in the same city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most people with Medicare coverage won\u2019t need to pay a dime for Arexvy, but private insurance plans may have cost-sharing policies\u2014even when they cover it. These policies may require the beneficiary to cover copays, co-insurance, or other out-of-pocket costs, even after you\u2019ve met your deductible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alternative options if Medicare doesn’t cover Arexvy<\/span><\/h2>\n

Not everyone has Medicare. And even some who do\u2014<\/span>roughly 16 million<\/span><\/a>\u2014don\u2019t have Part D drug plans. Plus, some private insurance plans won\u2019t cover the RSV vaccines. Fortunately, paying full price out of pocket isn\u2019t the only other option. There are a few other reliable ways to save money on Arexvy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sign up for Arexvy coupons<\/span><\/h3>\n

In most cases, if you have Medicare <\/span>without <\/span><\/i>Part D, and then qualify for Medicaid, you will be automatically facilitated into a standalone Part D plan. The<\/span> Medicaid <\/span>eligibility requirements<\/span><\/a> vary by state, so<\/span> check with your state<\/span><\/a> to apply.<\/span><\/p>\n

Look into other government and nonprofit assistance<\/span><\/h3>\n

Nonprofit organizations like the<\/span> Patient Advocate Foundation<\/span><\/a> and the<\/span> PAN Foundation<\/span><\/a> offer aid and grants to help patients pay for their prescription drugs. But, like Medicaid, you\u2019ll need to meet certain requirements to qualify.<\/span> Each state also has patient assistance programs<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>which may contribute to out-of-pocket drug costs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consider an HSA or FSA<\/span><\/h3>\n

Health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) \u201callow individuals to use pretax dollars to cover out-of-pocket expenses, which can include vaccines not fully covered by Medicare or other insurance plans,\u201d Perlson says. \u201cIn situations where the Arexvy vaccine might not be fully covered, directing patients toward utilizing these accounts for payment can ease the financial burden significantly.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since Medicare covers Arexvy, this would primarily apply to private insurance plans or cases when patients have to pay for Arexvy upfront.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask about alternatives<\/span><\/h3>\n

Currently, the only <\/span>FDA-approved alternative to Arexvy<\/span><\/a> is Pfizer\u2019s Abrysvo. While Arexvy may be cheaper than <\/span>Abrysvo<\/span><\/a> in many cases, it can\u2019t hurt to compare prices. Consult a healthcare provider about which vaccine would be better for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Locate less expensive pharmacy options<\/span><\/h3>\n
