However, Dr. Bonk says pet owners may notice their dog experiencing side effects at higher doses or longer-term use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/animal-veterinary\/resources-you\/what-veterinarians-should-advise-clients-about-pain-control-and-nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse reactions of meloxicam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in dogs can include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dog-diarrhea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy (tiredness)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal or stomach ulcers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney and liver problems<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"common-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 id=\"gastrointestinal-upset\"><strong>Gastrointestinal upset<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effect of meloxicam in dogs is in the digestive system.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bonk explains that taking oral meloxicam can cause digestive problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased or lack of appetite. This is because the meloxicam is a cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Unfortunately, some forms of COX are also involved in a lot of other bodily functions, particularly in the production of mucus to protect the lining of the stomach from its own acid,&rdquo; Dr. Bonk explains. &ldquo;If you decrease COX for inflammation, you may also decrease the protection that the stomach creates for itself, potentially leading to those digestive signs of vomiting, diarrhea, and not eating.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If left untreated, many adverse side effects of meloxicam can lead to more severe health complications in dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"gastrointestinal-ulcers\"><strong>Gastrointestinal ulcers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal or stomach ulcers are open sores that occur when stomach acid erodes through a dog&rsquo;s mucosa (mucous membrane). This condition is fairly common among dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Long-term use or high doses of meloxicam can damage the stomach lining, leading to ulcers,&rdquo; Dr. Glassman says. &ldquo;Symptoms might include vomiting blood or black, tarry stools (digested blood). Gastrointestinal ulcers can be idiosyncratic, meaning we don&rsquo;t know why they occur, but they may occur at a normal dose or with only a few doses of meloxicam (in some animals).&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"kidney-dysfunction\"><strong>Kidney dysfunction<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Glassman says that meloxicam&#8217;s side effects for dogs may include kidney damage due to hypoxemia.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;This is due to disrupting the kidney&rsquo;s ability to maintain its blood pressure in an optimal range,&rdquo; Dr. Glassman says. &ldquo;This is particularly important when a pet has preexisting kidney disease or low blood pressure (dehydrated, debilitated, etc.) and is less of an issue in an animal that is otherwise very healthy and normal.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"liver-damage\"><strong>Liver damage<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Glassman states that some liquid meloxicam formulations can contain small amounts of the sweetener xylitol. If given a higher dose of meloxicam, your dog may be more susceptible to xylitol poisoning, which can cause liver damage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Xylitol has been found to cause liver toxicity in dogs,&rdquo; Dr. Glassman says. &ldquo;However, the dose of xylitol used in metacam is very low&mdash;still, this could be an issue if a dog were to overdose on meloxicam.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you believe your dog is experiencing adverse effects from meloxicam, stop administering the steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and seek immediate help from your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-do-meloxicam-side-effects-last-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do meloxicam side effects last for dogs?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Glassman says the duration of meloxicam side effects for dogs varies depending on which symptoms your dog is experiencing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Most minor gastrointestinal side effects like upset stomach may resolve within 24 hours of stopping the medication. However, some gastrointestinal ulcers will be a medical or surgical problem. Either because meds need to be given to protect the stomach or because they end up perforating the stomach and need surgery to fix a hole in the stomach. Some effects like kidney damage could be longer-lasting and require medical intervention long-term.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice your dog displaying any signs of pain or discomfort from taking meloxicam, it&rsquo;s best to stop the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/singlecare-for-pet-prescriptions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seek medical guidance from your veterinarian.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;If the side effects are severe, your vet will probably take your pet off meloxicam or reduce the dose,&rdquo; Dr. Bonk says. &ldquo;Once the medication is discontinued, side effects generally disappear within a few days.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/meloxicam\"><b>Save up to 80% on meloxicam<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-meloxicam-safe-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is meloxicam safe for dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Bonk, meloxicam is safe for dogs. However, Dr. Bonk notes that pet owners can lessen the occurrence of side effects with proper and frequent doses.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are potential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/meloxicam-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if meloxicam is taken with certain medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"nsaids-and-corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs and Corticosteroids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meloxicam may cause adverse effects if taken with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Meloxicam can interact with other medications, such as other NSAIDs, as this would overly suppress the prostaglandin pathway,&rdquo; Dr. Glassman says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids, or steroids, are a type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK554612\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a dog may take to treat conditions like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/arthritis-in-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;Concurrent corticosteroids (prednisone and dexamethasone) would also suppress the prostaglandin pathways more and likely result in stomach ulceration,&rdquo; Dr. Glassman adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinarian may prescribe a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diuretic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically furosemide, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/pharmacology\/systemic-pharmacotherapeutics-of-the-cardiovascular-system\/diuretics-for-use-in-animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat congestive heart failure (CHF)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other health conditions. Meloxicam may lessen the effects of this drug if taken in combination. In addition, taking meloxicam and a diuretic together <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=d5e12448-1ca1-46a4-8de4-e8b94567e5a8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may cause kidney problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, potentially leading to kidney or renal failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticoagulants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticoagulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as warfarin, are prescribed to canines to prevent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4204837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abnormal blood clotting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from heart disease and other medical conditions. Clinical signs and symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmeds.org\/pet-poison-control-list\/meloxicam\/#!form\/PPCDonations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meloxicam toxicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black, tarry stool<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness, involuntary muscle movements, and seizures can indicate severe meloxicam poisoning.
