If you have a dog who\u2019s experiencing pain, anxiety, or a combination of the two, you might be wondering if you can use gabapentin and trazodone for dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. Gabapentin and trazodone together for dogs is a safe and effective way to help with both pain and anxiety. \u201cThese medications can work synergistically to manage both pain and anxiety, providing a more comprehensive approach to treatment,\u201d says Sabrina Kong, DVM, veterinarian at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/welovedoodles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeLoveDoodles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHowever, as with any medication regimen, it\u2019s essential to closely monitor your dog for any adverse effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-gabapentin-and-trazodone-used-for-in-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are gabapentin and trazodone used for in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main uses for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gabapentin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trazodone-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in dogs are the treatment of pain (chronic pain or acute pain) and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin is a seizure medication that can be prescribed to dogs as a pain medication. \u201cIt is also used by many vets (including me) for post-operative, more acute pain,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathieu Glassman, MBA, VMD, DACVS, veterinary surgeon and founder and CEO of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/drcuddles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Cuddles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some will also use it as a sedative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, trazodone is used mainly for its sedative and anti-anxiety effects, Dr. Glassman says. \u201cI describe it to owners as a fast-acting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their pet,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is useful for treating anxiety-related conditions in dogs, such as separation anxiety, or for calming dogs during stressful situations like veterinary visits or thunderstorms.\u201d It\u2019s also often used after surgery to reduce a pet\u2019s activity level so that they can rest and recover after the surgery, he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies show the effectiveness of each of these medications on their own. For example,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25029308\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2014 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that trazodone was effective at helping dogs remain calm and sedated while recovering from orthopedic surgery. Likewise,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/avmajournals.avma.org\/view\/journals\/javma\/260\/9\/javma.21.03.0167.xml#:~:text=Results%20of%20this%20study%20indicated,to%20those%20administered%20a%20placebo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the use of gabapentin significantly decreased signs of stress in dogs, as compared to a placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, there aren\u2019t many studies that look at how gabapentin and trazodone work together for dogs. One promising<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/avmajournals.avma.org\/view\/journals\/ajvr\/83\/8\/ajvr.22.03.0047.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Veterinary Research<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked primarily at electroretinographic (ERG) responses in dogs. They found that when dogs were given a combination of trazodone and gabapentin, significant decreases in ERG wave amplitudes were found. Of note, the authors suggest that gabapentin and trazodone are effective ways to treat anxiety in dogs before performing ERGs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-safe-to-use-gabapentin-and-trazodone-together-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to use gabapentin and trazodone together for dogs?<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safety of gabapentin and trazodone together for dogs hasn\u2019t been studied extensively. However, another assuring take-home message of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/avmajournals.avma.org\/view\/journals\/ajvr\/83\/8\/ajvr.22.03.0047.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Journal of Veterinary Research<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study was that using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin and trazodone together had no adverse effects on the dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other good news is that many veterinarians use gabapentin and trazodone in combination in dogs without safety concerns. \u201cIt is very safe for us to use gabapentin and trazodone together,\u201d says Dr. Glassman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dwight Alleyne, DVM, a veterinarian at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/betterpet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betterpet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shares a similar sentiment. \u201cYes, it is safe to use both gabapentin trazodone together in dogs,\u201d he assures, saying that doing so is a usual protocol among veterinarians. \u201cThese drugs are commonly used for the \u2018Chill Protocol\u2019 to help anxious dogs with veterinary or grooming visits,\u201d Dr. Alleyne shares.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects-of-gabapentin-and-trazodone-in-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of gabapentin and trazodone in dogs<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Kong, common trazodone and gabapentin for dogs side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sedation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ataxia (uncoordinated movements)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal upset<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While rare, serious side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious changes in behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf any of these severe side effects occur, it is essential to contact your vet immediately,\u201d Dr. Kong says. \u201cPet owners should also be vigilant for signs of allergic reactions, such as swelling or hives, which would necessitate immediate veterinary attention.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"interactions-of-gabapentin-and-trazodone-with-other-pet-meds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactions of gabapentin and trazodone with other pet meds<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it okay to take gabapentin and trazodone along with other pet meds you are giving your dog? The answer is that it depends on which medication you are considering, along with your dog&#8217;s overall health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kong says your best bet is to reach out to your vet. \u201cGabapentin and trazodone can interact with other medications, so it\u2019s very important to inform your veterinarian of all the medicines and supplements your dog is taking,\u201d she says. \u201cCombining these drugs with other central nervous system depressants, for example, can increase the risk of sedation and respiratory depression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many dog owners wonder, in particular, if it\u2019s safe to combine gabapentin and trazodone with CBD products for dogs. Taking these two medications with any medication that causes sedation, such as certain CBD products, can cause a cumulative sedative effect that may be concerning for pet owners, Dr. Glassman says. But he doesn\u2019t think the reaction would be particularly worrisome. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would not expect this to be a life-threatening sedation if given within the appropriate dose range,\u201d Dr. Glassman assures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gabapentin-and-trazodone-dosage-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin and trazodone dosage for dogs<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Alleyne, the average gabapentin and trazodone for dogs dosage is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone at 5 mg\/ kg<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin at 10 mg\/kg<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDosages may need to be adjusted based on breed, weight, and primary cause of anxiety,\u201d Dr. Alleyne remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Glassman says that for pain relief, you can administer gabapentin at 10 mg\/kg at a frequency of about two to three times per day. For neuropathic pain, you can go as high as 40 mg\/kg, he says, with the consent of your vet. Trazodone for anxiety can be given at 5-8 mg\/kg, two to three times a day, Dr. Glassman says. \u201cI will go up to 10 mg\/kg as part of pre-visit therapy,\u201d he notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both trazodone and gabapentin are given in the human form, as there is no specially formulated pet form of these drugs.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/thescipub.com\/pdf\/ajavsp.2017.188.194.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/gabapentin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both used on an off-label or extra-label basis, as they are only approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-dogs-overdose-on-gabapentin-or-trazodone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can dogs overdose on gabapentin or trazodone?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any drug, you can take too much of gabapentin or trazodone. \u201cA dog can overdose on these two medications if they are given too high of a dose,\u201d says Dr. Alleyne. \u201cSigns of overdose include extreme sedation or lethargy.\u201d You should contact your vet if you notice these or any concerning symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kong says gabapentin should be dosed at no more than 20 mg\/kg every 8-12 hours, and trazodone should be dosed at 2-16 mg\/kg every 8-24 hours. Dr. Kong explains that the dosage of these drugs depends on the severity of the condition being treated and your dog\u2019s size, weight, and health needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-i-give-my-dog-gabapentin-and-trazodone-every-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I give my dog gabapentin and trazodone every day?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on what\u2019s causing the pain, some dogs need to take gabapentin<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/management-and-nutrition\/pain-assessment-and-management\/analgesics-used-in-animals#Other-Analgesic-Agents_v4643505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for several weeks or months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until their pain decreases. Trazodone<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvm360.com\/view\/using-clonidine-and-trazodone-anxiety-based-behavior-disorders-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is often taken daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it can also be used as needed in certain situations, such as when your dog is experiencing separation anxiety or is afraid of a thunderstorm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Alleyne says that combining these two on a long-term basis is usually not recommended because of their sedative effects, though they certainly can be given individually. Dr. Kong explains that combining these medications daily may be necessary in certain situations. \u201cBut it is crucial to follow your veterinarian&#8217;s guidance on dosing and frequency to avoid potential overdose,\u201d Dr. Kong describes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-give-your-dog-gabapentin-and-trazodone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to give your dog gabapentin and trazodone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some tips for administering these two medication for your dog, as per Dr. Kong:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin and trazodone can be taken with or without food, but giving them with food may help reduce the risk of tummy upset<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t ever double up on doses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Glassman recommends that pet owners use peanut butter, cheese, or anything that can hide the pill for administering doses. \u201cThey do not taste great, so unless you have a dog that is a little insane about eating things (as I do), you will likely need to coat it in something tasty,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for whether gabapentin and trazodone need to be tapered before discontinuing, Dr. Glassman states that there is no need to taper either drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gabapentin-and-trazodone-alternatives-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin and trazodone alternatives for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the veterinarians we consulted, the following gabapentin and trazodone alternatives are options to consider and talk to your dog\u2019s vet about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using trazodone with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acepromazine-maleate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acepromazine<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using different anti-anxiety medications, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Prozac)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin to assist with sedation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for pain relief\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin and trazodone are usually given together in dogs who are experiencing anxiety and pain.
