If you have PCOS, your healthcare provider might recommend using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5774551\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal birth control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like the combination pill, patch, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iud-birth-control-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intrauterine device (IUD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help manage symptoms of PCOS. Here\u2019s what you need to know about the best types of birth control for PCOS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is PCOS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polycystic ovary syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sometimes called polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/000369.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which a woman\u2019s ovaries produce a greater amount of androgens (male hormones) than normal, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kimberly-langdon-m-d-41847610\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Langdon, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, OB-GYN and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coologics.com\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coologics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hormonal imbalance can prevent ovulation (the release of eggs from the ovaries) and cause irregular periods. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome-pcos-beyond-the-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of PCOS <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">typically begin during puberty but can also occur later in adolescence or early adulthood. Symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Irregular periods:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On average, women with PCOS menstruate less than eight times yearly. That\u2019s because ovulation doesn\u2019t occur regularly, causing the lining of the uterus, or endometrium, to become thicker than usual. When a period does occur, it can be heavy or last for a longer amount of time. What\u2019s more, missing periods leads to an increased risk of endometrial cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weight gain:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In approximately 50% of women, PCOS correlates with weight gain and obesity, which can develop as early as puberty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hair growth: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS can cause abnormal body hair growth, or hirsutism, on the neck, chin, upper lip, sideburn area, chest, abdomen, upper arm, and inner thighs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acne:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Altered hormone levels cause blocked hair follicles and oily skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infertility:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Due to irregular ovulation, it may be harder for women with PCOS to get pregnant without fertility treatments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sleep apnea: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 50% of women with PCOS experience sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing stops for brief periods during sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS affects an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/basics\/pcos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% to 12%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women of reproductive age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. PCOS is associated with serious health conditions like insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and stroke. Women with PCOS are also more likely to experience depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and eating disorders like bulimia and binge eating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination hormonal contraception pills containing estrogen and progesterone are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8090477\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-line treatment for PCOS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The patch, vaginal ring, shot, and hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) are also options. But for individuals who can\u2019t take estrogen, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6094524\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progestin-only pill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or \u201cmini-pill,\u201d is an option.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How birth control helps PCOS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no cure for PCOS, but birth control can benefit people with PCOS in many ways, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gregmarchandmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Marchand, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified OB-GYN in Mesa, Arizona, and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marchandinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Marchand Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/experts-and-stories\/ask-acog\/can-birth-control-pills-cure-pcos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control works<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to manage PCOS in the following ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreasing testosterone and other androgen levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulating the menstrual cycle and ovulation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing the risk of endometrial cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Marchand, birth control works faster than other PCOS treatments, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can take months or years to regulate periods. Additionally, estrogen-containing birth control should be avoided in women older than 35 who smoke, women who have had a previous heart attack or stroke, or women who live with migraines with auras, says Dr. Marchand. Women with a history of blood clots should not take it either, says Dr. Langdon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can birth control make PCOS worse?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, but the medroxyprogesterone acetate injection (Depo-Provera shot) can make you hungrier, which can lead to weight gain,\u201d says Dr. Marchand.
