It is also sometimes prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-for-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vortioxetine, the active ingredient in Trintellix, helps improve levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) that significantly impacts mood, emotional regulation, and appetite.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone taking this drug for the first time might wonder: How long does it take Trintellix to work? Experts say patients may experience symptom improvement in as little as two weeks, but it can take four to six weeks for the drug to reach its full effect. It&rsquo;s important to alert your prescribing healthcare professional if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/symptoms-of-depression-and-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression or anxiety symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have not started to improve after a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-expect-when-taking-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to expect when taking Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants like Trintellix take time to stabilize in the body so they can influence the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix is classified as an atypical antidepressant, but it has a similar timeline to other antidepressants, per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nevadamentalhealth.com\/our-psychiatrists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sid Khurana, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified psychiatrist and medical director of outpatient services at Nevada Mental Health in Las Vegas. Dr. Khurana says Trintellix starts working two to four weeks after starting it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-first-24-hours\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first 24 hours<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;[Trintellix] is absorbed into the bloodstream within about seven to 11 hours,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublichealthpharmacist.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christina M. Madison, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of The Public Health Pharmacist. &ldquo;It has a half-life of 66 hours, which means it lasts in the body for a long time once it reaches a steady state.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effects of Trintellix, whether positive or negative, generally will not develop during the first 24 hours. However, symptoms that develop within hours of dosing could indicate an allergic reaction to the drug.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/medications-and-drug-allergic-reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Trintellix may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial or throat swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing, difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling lightheaded<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shock<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of drug allergic reaction is considered a medical emergency, so seek emergency medical attention if symptoms develop after taking Trintellix (or any new drug).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-first-week-or-two\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first week or two<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep, energy, and appetite may improve within the first week or two of taking Trintellix, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/About-Mental-Illness\/Treatments\/Mental-Health-Medications\/Types-of-Medication\/Vortioxetine-(Trintellix)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mood and emotional regulation will likely take a couple more weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, patients may also experience common side effects in the first week or two. &ldquo;Side effects like nausea, vomiting, and constipation often develop soon after starting treatment and many times resolve in a few weeks,&rdquo; Dr. Khurana says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-first-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first month<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anxiety-vs-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression and anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should gradually improve during the first month of Trintellix. &ldquo;It often takes around four to six weeks of consistent use at an effective dose for Trintellix to reach its full effectiveness,&rdquo; says Jodie Pepin, Pharm.D., clinical pharmacy program director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harborhealth.com\/clinicians\/necessitatibus-magni-distinctio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harbor Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, side effects can also develop or worsen. Some people taking Trintellix continue experiencing nausea after the first two weeks, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.trintellix.com\/treatment\/side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the manufacturer of Trintellix, Takeda Pharmaceuticals Inc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Khurana says sexual problems, such as ejaculation or erection difficulties in men and decreased sex drive or orgasm difficulties in women,&nbsp;may also develop and persist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-sexual-side-effects\/\"><b>Does Trintellix cause sexual side effects?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"after-the-first-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first month<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients may need to wait up to six weeks to experience the full benefits of Trintellix. If symptoms of depression and anxiety have not improved after six weeks, the dosage may need to be adjusted.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions usually appear quickly. However, in rare cases, it is also possible to develop signs of an allergic reaction weeks after starting this medication. Reports<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/24750573.2018.1484013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skin reactions from vortioxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the active ingredient in Trintellix, include excessive itchiness, swelling, bruising, and red dots on the legs that develop three weeks to three months after starting Trintellix.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The side effects from this medication could be prolonged because of the long half-life of the medication,&rdquo; Dr. Madison explains. &ldquo;Always talk to your healthcare prescriber first before discontinuing, as it may require a tapered reduction in the dose before you completely discontinue the therapy.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-avoid-while-taking-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to avoid while taking Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When prescribing an antidepressant, healthcare providers take into account each patient&rsquo;s medical conditions, medical history, other prescriptions, and whether the person is breastfeeding or pregnant (or plans to become pregnant). This antidepressant should be avoided if a person has:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Had an allergic reaction to vortioxetine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Been diagnosed with bipolar disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone taking this drug for the first time should review this list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trintellixhcp.com\/dosing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and supplements to avoid mixing with Trintellix:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>MAOIs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Taking an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOI antidepressant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Trintellix increases the risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/serotonin-syndrome-treatment-and-medications#:~:text=Serotonin%20syndrome%20is%20an%20excess,drugs%20stay%20in%20your%20body.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Trintillex should only be taken after at least 14 days have passed since the last MAOI dose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Other serotonergic drugs or supplements <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/tricyclic-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the herbal supplement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/st-johns-wort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John&rsquo;s wort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all affect serotonin levels. Antipsychotics, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticonvulsants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g. tramadol or fentanyl), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/triptans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also impact serotonin. Mixing any of these (among other drugs that affect serotonin levels) with Trintellix can cause serotonin imbalance and raise the risk of serotonin syndrome.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Blood thinners <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Mixing Trintellix with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticoagulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like warfarin may increase a person&rsquo;s risk of bleeding. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also thin blood, so they should be used with caution, and only if approved by the healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Strong CYP2D6 inhibitors <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Drugs such as bupropion, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, paroxetine, and quinidine may cause an unintended boost of Trintellix in the bloodstream, which could increase the risk of side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Strong CYP inducers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifampin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rifampin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carbamazepine\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbamazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenytoin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenytoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause an unintended decrease of Trintellix in the bloodstream.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-when-taking-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor when taking Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boxed warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the most serious warning required by the FDA) because it is linked to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.trintellix.com\/treatment\/side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk of suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and behavior in young adults ages 24 and younger. For some cases, often the plan is to either stop the medicine or start a mood stabilizer.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trentellix-vs-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trentellix vs. alternatives<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Khurana says Trintellix works at a similar speed compared to its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most antidepressants don&rsquo;t reach their maximum efficacy until four weeks after starting them.
