Although weight loss is a side effect of Ozempic, it has only been approved by the Food and Drug Administration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/ozempic.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for two indications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To improve glycemic control as an additional treatment with a healthy diet and consistent exercise in adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But part of how Ozempic works in the body also causes one of the most commonly reported side effects of the drug: nausea. Here\u2019s what to know about this common side effect of Ozempic, including why it happens and how to get relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-ozempic-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Ozempic works<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Ozempic is FDA approved only for use in treating Type 2 diabetes, it has other benefits, too, working in different ways throughout the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ozempic-for-type-2-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic for Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightningvip.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexandria Lightning, DNP, APRN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of Lightning VIP, Ozempic treats Type 2 diabetes by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which regulates the body\u2019s blood sugar levels in three main ways:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By stimulating the pancreas to secrete more insulin when your blood sugar increases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By blocking the release of the hormone glucagon, which prevents the liver from producing too much glucose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By slowing down gastric emptying, which also slows down how quickly glucose enters the bloodstream after meals and helps decrease blood sugar spikes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the manufacturer of Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, stresses that the drug works best to lower blood sugar levels when used in combination with diet and exercise, so it\u2019s important to keep in mind that Ozempic itself isn\u2019t a cure-all for Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ozempic-for-cardiovascular-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic for cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn people with Type 2 diabetes and established <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/heart-disease-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ozempic has been shown to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events like heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular-related death,\u201d Dr. Lightning said. This is likely because the active ingredient, semaglutide, improves glycemic control, promotes weight loss, and may even have direct benefits on the cardiovascular system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2812511#:~:text=A%20recent%20study%20found%20that,by%2020%25%20compared%20with%20placebo.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a large-scale study published in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined semaglutide\u2019s cardioprotective effects and found that the drug reduced cardiovascular events by as much as 20% in people who took it for an average of 33 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ozempic-for-weight-loss-an-off-label-use\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic for weight loss, an off-label use<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Ozempic is only approved for use in people with Type 2 diabetes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/our-team\/paunel-vukasinov-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paunel Vukasinov, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, internist with Medical Offices of Manhattan and contributor to Lab Finder says that semaglutide has been shown to cause significant weight loss, leading to some people to use Ozempic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a non-intended use) for weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The GLP-1 molecule contained in semaglutide, Dr. Vukasinov explained, slows down digestion and sends a signal to your brain that you\u2019re full, effectively suppressing your appetite and causing you to eat less. However, it\u2019s worth noting that Ozempic is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-blue-cross-blue-shield-cover-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not typically covered by insurance plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the medication is used off-label. People wanting insurance to cover an injectable weight loss drug should talk to their healthcare provider about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is FDA approved for weight management and contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-nausea-why-it-happens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic nausea: Why it happens<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea is a common side effect of Ozempic, with clinical trials showing about 15%\u201320% of people who take it experience nausea, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/ozempic.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Novo Nordisk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOzempic can cause nausea because it slows gastric emptying and affects the brain&#8217;s appetite regulation centers, leading to sensations of fullness and sometimes gastrointestinal discomfort,\u201d Dr. Lightning explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-ozempic-cause-muscle-pain\/\"><b>Can Ozempic cause muscle pain?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is similar to the symptoms of a medical condition called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/gastroparesis-a-slow-emptying-stomach-can-cause-nausea-and-vomiting-202110272626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroparesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a delay in gastric emptying caused by diabetes and some other health conditions. People taking Ozempic don\u2019t have gastroparesis because the drug is purposely slowing down digestion, but the effects are similar: Your stomach remains full for longer than it would without the medication, and this causes it to send signals to the brain that can result in nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people experience nausea the entire time they\u2019re taking Ozempic, but other people find their nausea goes away over time,\u201d said Dr. Lightning, \u201cdiminishing as their body adjusts to the medication.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-nausea-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic nausea relief<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re struggling with Ozempic nausea, there are a few things you should know. Most people experience the worst nausea on the first and second days after injection, according to Dr. Vukasinov, but it\u2019s hard to say whether this is a short-term symptom of the medication or a long-term one since different people react differently to the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the dose of medication increases, the effects of nausea may become more prominent. But interestingly, some people experience nausea initially, but then their body adjusts to the medication, and they are able to tolerate higher doses well,\u201d Dr. Vukasinov said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting off on a lower dose and gradually increasing to a higher one can give your body enough time to adjust to Ozempic without causing severe nausea, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9821052\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to a study published in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You may be able to mitigate the effects of Ozempic on your stomach by making some changes to your diet. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/should-you-take-ozempic-with-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic can be taken with or without food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but Dr. Vukasinov says your stomach may respond better if you eat smaller meals instead of larger ones and focus on hydrating well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While no foods are strictly off-limits on Ozempic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-foods-to-avoid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some foods are likely to increase unpleasant GI symptoms like nausea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Avoid greasy, spicy, processed, and high-sugar foods and drinks, and limit the amount of cruciferous vegetables in your diet (which are technically healthy for you but can aggravate symptoms like gas and bloating). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozempic.com\/how-to-take\/side-effects.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk also recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eating foods with clear liquids, like soups and broths, eating more slowly than usual, and not lying down soon after eating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home remedies, like bland foods and ginger, are a couple of common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ways to prevent and treat nausea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications for nausea may negatively interact with Ozempic.
