However, there are important things to keep in mind before you stop the drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to learn about what to do if you want to stop taking metformin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-stop-metformin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why stop metformin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Diabetes Association (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesjournals.org\/clinical\/article\/40\/1\/97\/138890\/Recommendations-for-Practical-Use-of-Metformin-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends metformin as the first-line treatment option for Type 2 diabetes, and in most cases, people take it for many years.
