They are very different medications. It is used to treat both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/schizophrenia-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and bipolar depression associated with bipolar I disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium is a generic antimanic agent that helps regulate mood, which means it can help with both depression and mania associated with bipolar disorder. It has also been on the market for much longer than Latuda, so it tends to be much more affordable. It is available as a tablet, capsule, extended-release tablet, and a solution (liquid) taken by mouth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Khurana warns that lithium dosage can be tricky. \u201cWe have to make sure the levels are just right because going above can be toxic, and if they are too low, it could be ineffective,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/bipolardisorder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience intense mood swings. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include agitation, disorientation, loss of muscle coordination, fever, and others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda is metabolized in the liver by an enzyme called CYP3A4. Drugs classified as CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers may impact the level of Latuda in a person\u2019s bloodstream. Mixing Latuda with a CYP3A4 inhibitor may increase the level of Latuda in the body, thus increasing the risk of side effects. Mixing Latuda with CYP3A4 inducers may speed up the metabolism of Latuda, making it less effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescribing information for Latuda also cautions to avoid grapefruit or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/grapefruit-juice-with-medicine-other-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grapefruit juice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while taking this medication. everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people experience an increase in depression and suicidal thoughts while taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotic drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/mood-stabilizers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mood stabilizers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s important to monitor for signs of worsening mental illness while taking either of these medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda should not be taken for depressive symptoms of dementia-related psychosis in older adults with dementia. Latuda is not FDA approved for treating depression in this population, as the drug may increase the risk of death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Khurana stated, lithium dosages should be closely monitored. This drug can be toxic at high doses. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a681039.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warning emphasizes that people taking lithium should keep and attend all of their appointments with their healthcare providers, as well as laboratory appointments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both medications have boxed warnings (also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Latuda\u2019s boxed warning is about suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and lithium\u2019s boxed warning is about lithium toxicity\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/25207-lithium-toxicity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a life-threatening condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can cause intestinal and neurological symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thoroughly discuss your family medical history, personal medical history, other health conditions, and other prescription drugs and daily supplements with a healthcare provider before starting either of these medications.
