Beyond that, they are very different prescription medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Trulicity is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Jardiance is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; says Jodie Pepin, Pharm.D., clinical pharmacy program director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harborhealth.com\/providers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harbor Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;Trulicity works by helping the body to release more insulin from the pancreas, and Jardiance works by allowing the kidneys to reabsorb glucose and then flush it out in the urine.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-jardiance-and-trulicity-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Jardiance and Trulicity together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because taking Jardiance and Trulicity together is safe, some healthcare providers recommend that their patients take both.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;When treating diabetes, we like to cover several bases to be more effective. That&rsquo;s why we often combine drugs that work in different pathways,&rdquo; Dr. Pepin explained.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescribers may also choose drugs that work together while helping with other conditions related to diabetes. For instance, SGLT2 inhibitors like Jardiance and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/farxiga\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farxiga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been shown to protect against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investor.lilly.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/jardiancer-reduced-risk-cardiovascular-death-adults-type-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure from heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org\/atoz\/content\/sglt2-inhibitors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsening kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people with Type 2 diabetes. Injectable diabetes treatments such as Trulicity, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/victoza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, are linked to weight loss, &ldquo;which many people with diabetes need help with to improve their all-around health,&rdquo; Dr. Pepin says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/landia\/article\/PIIS2213-8587(18)30023-8\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study funded by Eli Lilly and Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the manufacturer of both Jardiance and Trulicity, found that patients who took both medications had better control of blood glucose levels than patients who took Jardiance alone. &ldquo;However, they had a greater incidence of gastrointestinal distress, including diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting,&rdquo; Dr. Pepin added. Additionally, combining the medications may raise the risk of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Left unchecked, hypoglycemia can quickly turn into a medical emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"taking-jardiance-and-trulicity-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking Jardiance and Trulicity together<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no known interactions between Jardiance and Trulicity, which means taking them together is considered generally safe. Some healthcare providers prescribe both medications to patients who may experience better glycemic control from a two-pronged approach.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best practices for taking Jardiance and Trulicity together are the same as the best practices for taking them individually:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider before taking new medications. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider needs to know your complete medical history (including family medical history), conditions, and other medications you&rsquo;re taking before prescribing any new antidiabetes treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take your medicine consistently. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance, an oral tablet, should be taken at the same time every day. Trulicity, a subcutaneous injection in a prefilled injector pen, should be taken at the same time, on the same day, each week.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be mindful of what and how much you eat. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Consuming large portions of food or high-fat meals may lead to more pronounced side effects of the medication,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtalkrealfood.com\/info.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angela Ginn-Meadow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She recommends eating smaller portions and avoiding fried food to minimize nausea from these medications.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Report serious side effects to your healthcare provider. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no known drug interactions between Jardiance and Trulicity. However, both drugs have the potential to cause hypoglycemia. Anyone taking Jardiance and Trulicity together should be aware of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early signs of hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including confusion, dizziness, and a fast heart rate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never stop taking Jardiance, Trulicity, or both without first seeking medical advice from a healthcare professional.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-jardiance-or-trulicity-better\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Jardiance or Trulicity better?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Jardiance and Trulicity are effective treatments for Type 2 diabetes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24766495\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2014 found that empagliflozin, the active ingredient in Jardiance, is effective at controlling blood sugar and reducing body weight and blood pressure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7896253\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study published in 2021 in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes Care<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a publication of the American Diabetes Association, found a dose-dependent relationship between dulaglutide, the active ingredient in Trulicity, and a reduction in blood sugar and body weight.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The effectiveness of medication can be determined by meeting glucose and A1C targets,&rdquo; Ginn-Meadow added. &ldquo;You and your healthcare provider will choose the best medication to help you achieve your diabetes goals.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, there is no clear answer as to which of these diabetes medications is better than the other. They are simply different.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jardiance-vs-trulicity-forms-of-administration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance vs. Trulicity: Forms of administration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance is available as a tablet that is taken by mouth on a daily basis, and Trulicity is available as a subcutaneous injection in an injector pen taken once weekly. Some people with diabetes may prefer the convenience of a once-weekly drug instead of a daily pill. Others, especially those with a fear of needles, may prefer taking their medication by mouth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jardiance-vs-trulicity-side-effects-and-risks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance vs. Trulicity: Side effects and risks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These diabetes drugs also have different possible side effects and risks to consider. Common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/jardiance-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include urinary tract infections (UTIs),&nbsp; genital yeast infections, and upper respiratory infections. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trulicity-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of Trulicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more related to the gastrointestinal system&mdash;nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, and suppressed appetite, for instance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance may not be suitable for people with kidney or liver disease, while Trulicity may not be suitable for people with a family history of thyroid cancer. Both medications cause an increased risk of pancreas problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jardiance-vs-trulicity-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance vs Trulicity: Cost<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance is more affordable than Trulicity before insurance or discounts. However, a person&rsquo;s out-of-pocket cost for any prescription medication varies greatly depending on insurance coverage.
