From there, says Dr. Chambers, you can calculate how much medicine you need to give your pet:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFirst, convert your pet&#8217;s weight to kilograms. This is done by dividing your pet\u2019s weight in pounds by 2.2. Once you have their weight in kilograms, multiply this number by 0.5 milligrams and 1 milligram to get the recommended range of milligrams to administer every 12 to 24 hours. Round to the nearest 5 milligrams.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, you won\u2019t need to calculate your dog\u2019s omeprazole dosage on your own. Omeprazole falls under a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/proton-pump-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PPIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). If your dog vomits while taking the medicine on an empty stomach, you can give future doses with food.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not uncommon to forget to give a dose of medication to your dog. If you miss a dose of omeprazole, Dr. Chambers says to go ahead and give your dog the dose if it is within a few hours of the scheduled time. \u201cIf the missed dose is not realized until a few hours from the next scheduled dose, consider waiting until that dose is due,\u201d Dr. Chambers adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unsure what to do, you can contact your veterinarian for guidance on administering the next dose of omeprazole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you may need to stop giving your dog omeprazole, Dr. Spragley says the medication clears quickly from your dog\u2019s bloodstream. \u201cThe drug&#8217;s half-life is only one hour in dogs,\u201d Dr. Spragley says. \u201cThe effects of omeprazole\u2019s antisecretory effect can last up to three to four days from a single dose, even though it is no longer present in the bloodstream.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Omeprazole (brand name Prilosec) is a potent drug that reduces stomach acid.
