People who take Prozac or who are considering starting Prozac may ask, &ldquo;Will this medicine make me gain weight?&rdquo; The short answer is that some weight gain is possible with Prozac; however, it tends to be less than the weight gain experienced with certain other antidepressants. About 1.4% of patients who took Prozac reported weight loss, compared to 0.5% who took placebo.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/ocd-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obsessive-compulsive disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OCD), 17% of people who took Prozac reported decreased appetite, compared to 10% of people who took placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials for bulimia, 8% of people who took Prozac reported decreased appetite, compared to 4% of people who took placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children and adolescents who take Prozac have their height and weight monitored, as the medication can affect growth rate and weight.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-prozac-cause-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Prozac cause weight gain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although some people lose weight on Prozac, others will gain weight. The good news is that weight gain is rare; the prescribing information does not list weight gain as a side effect, and another data reference notes that weight gain occurs in only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/?drugLabelId=3205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients. For those who gain weight on Prozac, how does this happen? There may be several explanations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common symptom of depression is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change in appetite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some people may eat more, while others eat less. If you are eating less due to depression, you may lose some weight. Then, once you start treatment with methods such as therapy and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you will begin to notice an improvement in symptoms after a few weeks. Your appetite may gradually return to normal, and you may start eating more, which may contribute to weight gain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people experience other side effects from Prozac, such as fatigue, drowsiness, or dizziness, especially in the first month or two while adjusting to the medicine. This may make you less likely to exercise, making you gain a small amount of weight. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1049472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Lexapro and Paxil were each associated with a 15% higher risk of weight gain than Zoloft in the first six months of treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for other types of antidepressant medications, certain medicines or drug classes are more likely to list weight gain as a common side effect, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/tricyclic-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TCAs), such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nortriptyline-vs-amitriptyline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or imipramine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccjm.org\/content\/ccjom\/70\/7\/314.full.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) such as phenelzine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remeron (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mirtazapine-for-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mirtazapine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trazodone-for-sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some antidepressants, such as Wellbutrin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/bupropion-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bupropion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are generally not associated with weight gain, and may even be more likely to cause weight loss.
