It can also treat parasitic infections, like giardia, and is frequently used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for a non-FDA-approved use) to help treat Crohn&rsquo;s disease, bite wounds, and oral infections. Be sure to check food labels carefully for either of these ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-you-eat-while-taking-metronidazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you eat while taking metronidazole?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK539728\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metronidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be taken with or without food unless you&rsquo;re prescribed the extended-release tablets, which should be taken on an empty stomach&mdash;one hour before or two hours after eating. Taking metronidazole with a bland food (like crackers) can reduce gastrointestinal side effects, suggests <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digestivereset.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inna Melamed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., functional medicine practitioner and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive Reset<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people choose to eat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/taking-probiotics-with-antibiotics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probiotic-rich foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or take a probiotic supplement while taking antibiotics to help reduce stomach problems. Metronidazole may also interact with the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/metronidazole\/taking-metronidazole-with-other-medicines-and-herbal-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warfarin, a blood thinner<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phenytoin or phenobarbital, epilepsy medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Busulfan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mycophenolate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cimetidine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grobman notes that many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cough-syrup-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter (OTC) cold and cough syrups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also contain propylene glycol, so check ingredient labels carefully before choosing one from the pharmacy or supermarket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no specific warnings against taking metronidazole with other common OTC drugs, like Tylenol or NSAID pain relievers, and daily vitamins or supplements.
