Ibuprofen has a wide margin of safety in people, so most people experience no side effects or complications at normal doses. Most individuals do not require emergency medical attention even when too much is taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not true for pets. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pet-meds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen is more poisonous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in dogs and cats than in humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a variety of reasons, dogs and cats are more sensitive to ibuprofen and other human NSAIDs. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmeds.org\/pet-poison-control-list\/ibuprofen-naproxen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single 124 mg dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is enough to induce symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvm360.com\/view\/toxciology-brief-ibuprofen-toxicosis-dogs-cats-and-ferrets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen toxicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in an average-sized cat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats don\u2019t have the same <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/toxicology\/toxicoses-from-human-analgesics\/toxicoses-from-human-analgesics-in-animals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concentration of liver enzymes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needed to break down ibuprofen as people do. People rapidly break down ibuprofen, so it lasts for only a few hours after a pill is swallowed. Cats don\u2019t. Instead, the drug lasts for days at significantly high concentrations. In other words, small doses of ibuprofen in a cat are equivalent to long-lasting overdoses in a person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen overdoses are dangerous because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/animal-veterinary\/animal-health-literacy\/get-facts-about-pain-relievers-pets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the drug blocks the enzymes used to synthesize prostaglandins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These molecules are like hormones and have many uses throughout the body. One thing they do is cause swelling and pain, so ibuprofen reduces both. However, they also regulate blood clotting, protect the stomach and intestines from stomach acid, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cliniciansbrief.com\/article\/nsaid-therapy-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase blood flow to the kidneys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the liver when needed. As a result, too much ibuprofen can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, gastrointestinal ulceration, or gastrointestinal perforation due to stomach acid damage. Because ibuprofen also decreases blood flow to the kidneys and liver, too much ibuprofen can result in liver damage, kidney damage, or kidney failure. This is what happens when cats are given ibuprofen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-ibuprofen-safe-for-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is ibuprofen safe for cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can a cat have ibuprofen? No, ibuprofen is never safe for cats. Even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/ibuprofen-poisoning-in-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small doses can cause problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and human-sized doses could cause digestive system damage, kidney damage, or liver damage. Prolonged or heavy use could be lethal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects-of-ibuprofen-in-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of ibuprofen in cats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cat could have problems with even a small dose of ibuprofen. The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/ibuprofen-poisoning-in-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involve the gastrointestinal tract and include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refusal to eat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood in the vomit<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black and tarry stools<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms can appear <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmeds.org\/pet-poison-control-list\/ibuprofen-naproxen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two to six hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after ingestion, but some complications will not appear for several days. Immediate veterinary care is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects could result from giving the cat either a large dose of ibuprofen or repeated doses. In these cases, ibuprofen can compromise kidney function, damage the liver, and cause central nervous system problems. Besides the symptoms listed above, symptoms of more severe ibuprofen poisoning include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking more or drinking less<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellowing of the gums, eyes, or skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coma<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, a cat given ibuprofen should be seen by a veterinarian. If the cat also shows severe signs of ibuprofen toxicity, immediate emergency care is needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"interactions-of-ibuprofen-with-other-pet-meds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactions of ibuprofen with other pet meds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pet-pill-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not safe to give to cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
