Like many drugs that treat major depressive disorder, Trintellix influences the brain\u2019s serotonin levels to help regulate moods\u2014but stopping treatment can get complicated. That\u2019s because whether you\u2019re switching to a new treatment, concerned about long-term side effects, or feel like you no longer need medication, abruptly stopping Trintellix may cause withdrawal symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll answer why stopping Trintellix can cause withdrawal symptoms, how withdrawal symptoms feel, ways to avoid them, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"about-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s good reason that serotonin has a reputation as the brain\u2019s feel-good chemical. It has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK545168\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a range of responsibilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but is best known for regulating moods. That\u2019s why many antidepressant medications focus on boosting serotonin, and Trintellix is no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix belongs to a class of drugs called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which prevent neurons from reabsorbing serotonin once they release it into synapses (the space between two connecting neurons). \u201cTrintellix is a serotonergic antidepressant, similar, but somewhat different from the more typical SSRIs\u2014like Zoloft (sertraline), or Prozac (fluoxetine),\u201d says Dr. Alex Dimitriu, MD, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/siliconpsych.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menlo Park Psychiatry &amp; Sleep Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt is believed to have effects besides increasing levels of serotonin, and may possibly have some additional benefit to cognition and have lower sexual side effects.\u201d Also, unlike some other SSRIs like paroxetine, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4296590\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix directly modulates serotonin receptors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014although its exact mechanism of action is unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-sexual-side-effects\/\"><b>Does Trintellix cause sexual side effects?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommended starting dose of Trintellix is typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=1a5b68e2-14d0-419d-9ec6-1ca97145e838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 milligrams (mg) per day for adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If the patient doesn\u2019t see improvement, their healthcare provider may increase it to 20 mg. If the patient experiences side effects, they might decrease it to 5 mg. It\u2019s only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2018\/204447s017lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), although doctors occasionally prescribe it for other medical conditions, like anxiety or panic disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also popular because it has fewer side effects than other SSRIs. \u201cTrintellix may be prescribed if you have previously tried an SSRI and experienced poor side effects,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainside.com\/people\/caroline-newton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caroline Newton, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainside.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountainside Treatment Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cTrintellix has worked for people who have cognitive issues, such as brain fog, along with depression. It does not cause weight fluctuation and has fewer sexual-related side effects than some SSRI antidepressants.\u201d It\u2019s not suitable, however, for people with bipolar disorder since it could exacerbate manic episodes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-trintellix-take-to-work\/\"><b>How long does Trintellix take to work?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-stop-taking-trintellix-abruptly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you stop taking Trintellix abruptly?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the brain experiences long-term levels of certain neurotransmitters\u2014in this case, serotonin\u2014its neurons adapt. They gradually grow accustomed to those levels, and if they change suddenly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/going-off-antidepressants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it can cause side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s why \u201cany medication that acts on serotonin should be tapered off,\u201d Dr. Newton says. \u201cQuitting abruptly can cause a rebound of your depression symptoms or anxiety, and tapering allows your body and mind to stabilize.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only might going cold turkey with any SSRIs, SNRIs (like venlafaxine), tricyclic antidepressants, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) cause a rebound, but it might also lead to withdrawal symptoms, a condition called antidepressant discontinuation syndrome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/25218-antidepressant-discontinuation-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of discontinuation syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rarely ever life-threatening but may include nausea, dizziness, unusual dreams, tremors, trouble sleeping, paresthesia (a \u201cpins and needles\u201d feeling on the skin), fatigue, constipation, headaches, weight gain or loss, sexual dysfunction, and mood swings. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5449237\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that around 20% of patients experience these symptoms if they abruptly stop taking antidepressants after taking them for at least one month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common discontinuation symptoms of Trintellix, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8151377\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, were emotional lability, irritability, sudden worsening of mood, nervousness, and agitation. While these are all mood-related, it\u2019s important to remember that withdrawal symptoms aren\u2019t the same as a relapse. Harvard Health says the primary differences are that withdrawal occurs right away, while relapse symptoms appear over time. If you experience these, contact your healthcare provider or a mental health professional immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-stop-taking-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to stop taking Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, you should speak with your healthcare provider before going off Trintellix. They will give you specific instructions on how to do it so you avoid discontinuation syndrome. This will usually involve slowly tapering off the medication, giving your body time to adjust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpeak with your doctor first. Take good notes and journal, record how you feel each day, mood, sleep, and what bothers you, etc., so you can track changes before and after stopping the medication,\u201d Dr. Dimitriu says. \u201cWith medical guidance, always try to lower the dose as slowly as possible, so it&#8217;s hard to tell where the medication ends and where you begin again. Rapid changes can make lowering medication much harder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do experience withdrawal symptoms, they can last for a few weeks. But if they\u2019re particularly severe or persistent, your healthcare provider might prescribe medications to help deal with them, like over-the-counter NSAIDs for aches, antiemetics for nausea and vomiting, or benzodiazepines for anxiety or insomnia. In certain cases, they may also consider prescribing other antidepressants\u2014potentially one like fluoxetine (brand name: Prozac), which has a lower risk of withdrawal than other SSRIs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per Dr. Newton, \u201cIt\u2019s vital to follow up with your prescribing provider or psychiatrist after you\u2019ve stopped taking the medication to monitor your mental health conditions and any symptoms if they arise.\u201d She also encourages therapy and holistic wellness practices, which can help manage symptoms and contribute to an overall healthy lifestyle. That means eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep. Activities like yoga or meditation, as well as supplements like St. John\u2019s wort, may also help some people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiencing Trintellix withdrawal might seem discouraging or frustrating, but remember that it\u2019s usually only temporary.
